    Hi.
I just bought a wireless optical mouse which has been working as it should for about an hour now, in my PC. but when I first plugged the adapter to laptop and used it in that, the connection seem to have broken from time to time. Actually when the mouse cursor stops moving in the laptop the adapter still blinks indicating that it is receiving singal from the mouse. But in order to fix it I have re-plug the mouse's USB adapter so that windows XP detects it again.

    To put this short:
wireless optical mouse with USB adapter.
Stops working in windows XP after random periord.
The adapter still gets the signal but cursor wont move.
Replugging the adapter fixes the problem.

Any ideas what could be the problem..? Is it common to laptops? So far it has not stopped working on my desktop PC.

    Thank you.

it's common for USB, try using a different USB port if that doesn't work try it with new batteries

This could be related to the Microsoft USB Power Drain flaw in XP.
If your running Service Pack 2, it shouldn't be the problem.
Also try looking at the manufacturers FAQ's.

Thanks Pelvis. I do have SP2. The manufacturer didn't have any FAQs nor drivers for this model (R7-20D). It's A4 tech's mice.
Lately it hasn't disconnected too often, much lech than first.

Im thinking that it could have something to do with the power saving technology that it uses. But again the adapter seems to get the signal (according to the blinking light) and the USB device and USB mouse is detected windows XP at all times.

Could there be possibly some trick to make win XP refresh/recheck the USB port? Or a monitor of some kind that could tell what XP sees in the port..?
That might help to solve the problem.

    just had a thought

have you enabled USB Legacy support, in the BIOS[ot]this would explain why the mouse works and not the keyboard[/ot]

Thanks for the suggestion but it's enabled.

It's now confirmed however that the mice works well in the desktop PC but has the problems only when used in laptop... ;)

Well I contacted the HP's support but they were only able to point to a few patch download links for win XP. I don't know did they help or not, I have the feeling that it would work bit better now but it still stops from workin.
Also I havent been able to connect my cell phone at all with the USB datacable.
    I updated BIOS too.

    Any ideas, any one?

    Thanks!

I still have this problem. Does any one know any tweaks for usb ports that I could try?

Just changing some properties might help a lot.

I have a probelm a bit like this but it is actually because I have damaged the usb port, have a really good look at the usb port and check that the contacts are all nice and straight and havent been strained.

Oh sorry I must have miss-read.

Have you tried deleting the Universal Serial Bus controllers from within the computer management console, then scanning for hardware changes and letting them re-install? worth a poke ^^

Upon re-reading the whole thread yet again: Have you tried changing the channel the mouse is on? (If it is a radio waves wireless mouse) or is it bluetooth?

That's also a good idea, thank you. Just that simple search like that gives huge amount of results but I have just have to start searhing some time.

One new thing I learned was that after the mouse stopped working again I removed the drivers of the USB (port? device?) and after making windows to reinstall the driver it started working again. This was the first time I was able to continue using the mouse without physically unplugging it.
Now only if there would be some way to automatically do this, someway to poll the port or even a way to quickly reinstall the drivers by a keyboard press it would help some.
Does anyone have any ideas about this?

    Thanks!
