ok so i have a EVGA 680i SLI motherboard and a creative soundblaster X-Fi extreme gamer soundcard with a fatal1ty gaming headset (Creative Labs Fatal1ty Gaming Headset 51MZ0310AA002 at TigerDirect.com)

the microphone on the headset is not working, and ive installed and reinstalled drivers, troubleshooting, etc. any suggestions as to what to do to fix it?

When you say its not working - is it not recognized or completely dead? Sometimes they have a sneaky mute switch on the cable. Make sure you have the correct input device selected in your computers sounds and audio devices.

yeah i actually just realized it had the mute button... its no longer set to mute but it still wont detect sound. and windows sees the microphone, but it can't hear anything

Have you tried messing around with sound recorder? (start>run>sndrec32)

Make sure all your recording/input devices are un-muted and the correct sound recording default device is set correctly

Sorry I'm afraid my vista install is currently broken as I had the sheer audacity as to actually try to use it for something other than majong titans!

Is the gaming headset definitely supported by vista? Have you checked your device manager for any yellow exclamation marks?

yeah its a standard 3.5mm headset, and doesnt require drivers or anything. ive checked it out, and other people seem to be having this problem with the soundcard (X-Fi ExtremeGamer).

wow i just contacted creative support about this. they are the most unhelpful support i have ever used. all they told me to do was to check their website for troubleshooting, and then asked me if i wanted to buy a zen. i am never buying from creative again

maybe you'd be happier using Linux, cos stuff just works, obviously after installing the appropriate software, i switched to Linux after the fiasco that was Win9x & after having to activate XP by phone every 2 weeks, i figured, M$ can bo11ocks, so, because of HWF i switched to Linux, you will find it difficult for about 2 - 3 weeks but you'll soon discover the advantages of Linux

BTW: i'm disabled & have brain damage, so, if i can move to Linux anybody can, just download a LiveCD & boot from it to use Linux without damageing of even touching anything on your current system

BTW: i use Kubuntu Feisty 100% of the time

Edit: i still don't know everything about *nix but i'm always learning

yes, i said that here, but please don't swear on HWFs cos young eyes may be watching, i've only being using Linux for about 2 years, so, i don't know everything about it, but, i can easily see the potential & the advantages over Windoze

yeah i actually have like 20 linux CDs lieing around here in my room somewhere, and i have my computer set up to dual boot it, but since im more of a gamer, i have to use windows. and i really dont mind vista at all, my computer is powerful enough so that i dont get frame rate drops or anything, and i find its actually better than xp, except when it comes to certain drivers. i just put my old soundblaster audigy 2 zs gamer into this computer and it works perfectly, so i guess im stuck on this soundcard for a while

well have a look at Cedega, also most Windoze programs will run on linux through Wine although you should have AV set to only scan Wine locations & obviously a firewall, because, it is best to think of Wine as a Windoze emulator but it actually isn't an emulator.

BTW: does your motherboard have onboard sound ?, if yes enable it in the BIOS & unplug your sound card temporarily & use the onboard sound

yeah, generally onboard sound is not good, they have onboard sound just so they can say "multimedia included" but believe me that is crap

BTW: although i don't have much experience with sound cards i think the audigy is quite good & the audigy2zs is just a trimmed down version of the audigy, it probably only has less software included with it

@ferg: thank you for removing the swear word

yeah the audigy2zs is actually pretty good. but if anyone has any ideas on how to get the x-fi working then let me know. compared to the x-fi the audigy2zs is awful
