Out of memeory on 95/98 install

Hey, Ive been trying to put windows 95/98 on an old laptop, the specs are pretty poor, something along the lines of PMMX 122mhz CPU with 32mb of ram. I've had 98 on it before, and can also get damn small linux to install.

However when installing 98/95, in the scandisk section, it gets to about 99% of "Files Allocation Tables" then popsup saying it has run out of memory.

Anyone know what could be wrong?

are you doing this from a bootable cd or a floppy drive install? Is it win95 or win98? It *does* make a difference.

remember, these versions of windows were in effect DOS applications ie they required DOS to either be there already or would install DOS as part of the install procedure and before I begin looking at some of my old stuff, need to know *exactly* what you're doing.

 

how are you trying to install it ?

if your booting from a CD enabled boot disc (you can download 1 from Bootdisk.Com) & typing "Setup"

try typing Setup /is

this disables scandisk & runs the rest of setup

BTW: for a list of available install options type D:\<Win version>\setup /? at the prompt[ot]assuming you CD is D drive[/ot]

Edit: <Win version> = the version of Windowz your installing (Win95, Win98 & Win9x)

Edit: BTW: how large is the partition you are trying to install to ? & what is the partition type ? (FAT, FAT32)

 

You first need a boot disk with CD rom support, Next you have too fidsk and
create a new drive,Then format,..Then reboot with the same boot cd, and boot with cd rom support.. once you are at dos A:type your cd drive letter, Like
D: or E: followed by setup.. E:setup taht should start you going.

 

Thanks for the replies, I however worked out the problem, It was running scandisk on a 6 gig hard drive, and with only 32mb of ram, was failing.

Creating a smaller parition of around 500mb resolved the issue and all works fine now

 

i'm guessing, but if were you trying install an original Win95, Win95 (original) did not support FAT32, therefor, you had no alternative but the use FAT16 which is limited to around 2Gb (2048Mb)
