3 weeks ago, i had a problem with my notebook; In the middle of the night, the computer started all by itself (i was sleeping actually, this woke me up :) ) and shut itself down a few seconds later.

When i tried to start it again, it always shut itself down a few seconds later, sometimes it lasted longer but the result didn't change.(until i broght the comuter to the service where it worked pretty good with no errors or shutdowns until i left :) )

After three weeks, the service is telling me that the mainboard AND the graphics card is faulty. I wonder how they came up with BOTH devices faulty.I wonder how they came up with that idea? I actually believe that they couldn't figure out where the problem was and decided to replace anything related to the problem. Any opinions?

Sure you haven't got ghosts? hehe only joking, does it shut itself down as in "windows is now shutting down" and does the usual screen as it shuts down and takes a minute tops maybe, or does it just power off, as if the battery and mains adapter have both been uplugged?

It could be your sleep/hibernate settings. Check it.
If it's not, i know a great medium...

    :)

No it's nothing to do with windows or it's hybernate/sleep settings. I think it's definitely a hardware issue.

I believe it could be caused by a change in Voltage in the power grid. We can have these changes time to time where i live.

Hi, sounds like a virus to me. What service are you talking about when it says your motherboard and graphics card are faulty? I've never come across such a service this leads me to think it's a virus. If you had a faulty motherboard and graphics card your system bios would not post it will emitt and error beep code (depending on what bios you have e.g AMI, Pheonix etc) if you have an onboard speaker. Issue could be WOL (wake on lan), if you have a virus on your machine, hackers can easily access your machine over wan and find the mac address of your nic also internal IP. from that they can send a magic packet over wan to wake your machine. Try disabling WOL in the bios if the feature is available. But before writing your laptop off make sure you back up your stuff and formatt your machine and re install windows first and then check if you have the same issue.
