Hey everybody! Just got back from a hard day of (pro bobo) work down at the local community center. The problem with volunteer work is that volunteers often aren't qualified to do the work they're volunteering for. Even if they are, they often do sub-standard work. Here's what Hounor, Fred and myself had to deal with this weekend (see attachments -- you've got to see it to believe it). We're only half-way through sorting out this mess, but I'll get you guys some "after" pictures as soon as we've got something worth photographing.

    Peace,
    -AT

I tell you what that place is no walk in the park. It hurts me just to think of it.

It's a lot better already, but I'll wait until it's much closer to finished before I start posting our work. :)

I've never seen anybody run data/telco cabling like the guy who did this work before us. He actually ran the cabling like an electrician would, chaining the cable from one junction box to the next and splicing right into the middle of it. Nasty. We actually cut right into a hot line (!) because we thought we were cutting a cold one at a workstation that wasn't being used. Then we discovered the disturbing truth -- every phone drop in the office was run off a single cable, and just spliced all over the place. I've never seen nor heard of anything like it.

P.S. - None of the cabling he ran is legal to US building code, so we had to rip almost all of it out. Most of it worked poorly or not at all anyway.

We've put a few hours (16) so far and it looks a thousand times better and the phone quality has improved.

Almost forgot, please welcome Hounor to the forums. He's awesome with cabling and an indespensible asset with both this community center project and the one at my work. Knows a lot more about phone stuff than I do too. :)

Hah hah... I wouldn't quite call it fun, but I suppose it might be if you get to just see it from the forums or something ;-) I suck quite a bit at networking, but even I can tell that we have quite a bit of work to do to fix what this guy screwed up! But it'll definetly be a relief to see that place fixed up well. And believe me when i say that these guys do some really nice work!

Yeah, imagine our surprise when cutting a cable to one drop killed the entire office... *shudder*

Alright, we did a *lot* of work over the weekend, and accomplished quite a bit. We pulled out every phone and data cable in the entire building, and re-ran everything. We got all the phone stuff terminated, but haven't punched down the network stuff yet. Anyway, it's a work in progress, but here's some "after" shots for you. Everything pictured here is shown in the pictures in the first post. See the contrast?
