Anybody ever had to have a laptop dvd/cd-rw replaced or repaired before. How much is the likely cost? Mine is giving up the ghost on my IBM R32, sometimes it takes up to 10 reboots to recognise it's even there, and other times I put the cd in and it kind of starts up, but nothing happens. Got my new pc now, but I'm not quite ready to give the laptop up - it cost me a lot of money and I've only had it a couple years - thought it would last at least 5.

    Any ideas?

    Cheers :good:

for an average combo drive for laptops I'd guess at around £30 £40 maybe.

Thanks... any idea where I'd get one from?... done a search on ebay.. nothing... on the web there are lots of companies eager to fix it at £20 an hour, and £25 collect & return, but none of 'em seem to sell the parts.

If it's a swappable drive, I'd check with IBM and see about replacing it. If it's not a swappable drive, then you're probably just going to have to pony up and hope it doesn't take them forever to fix the problem.

try taking the drive out and putting it back in making sure it is making a good connection. if this fails to work then buy a new one but there easy enough to fit yourself i would'nt pay anyone to do it. hope this helps Dave :good:

Thanks....Dave35k, the problem is I know f-all about fixing that kind of thing and am likely to break some other components... I know someone who might be able to though. If not I guess I'll just have pony up and see. I'll let you all know what happens... cheers
