I have a intel D915GAV motherboard with intel Pentium 4 3.0 Ghz with HT. Also I have 2 sata hard drives and one samsung 80gb ide hard drive. The problem i am facing is when I first boot my system everything is normal and everything is detected normally, but when i restart my system ( no matter how many times) the samsung ide hard drive is not detected by bios but in windows it is detected. Also when its not detected in BIOS then in windows the DMA mode on the drive is disabled and its performance in a bit degraded. And my benq DW1640 dvd burner connected via the same ide cable as master drive dosent have any problem and is detected everytime, but when the hdd is not detected then the DMA mode( in windows) on my this drive is also disabled. I have upgraded my bios to the latest version, but that didn`t help. Please help !

Have you tried getting the settings for the harddrive and entering them manually in BIOS? My harddrive hates my BIOS and caused murder at first.

    Wierd Motherboard ! please help

Did you check if the jumper on that Samsung HDD is set properly? Maybe you should try connecting the masterconnector to the HDD and the other slave connector to the Benq dvd burner.

Have a look on the drive, it might say. Its the Cylinders, Sectors and Heads or CHS for short.
Ive been doing some googles and someone who has this drive (with a dma problem) has his set to 65535,16,63 but another persons is 16383,255,63 I suppose tally yours against the two. I wouldnt go changing it though, not before emailing samsung. I cant find anything official from samsung. Mine had it in the manual and my other drive has it written on the top.

When you say it isnt in bios do you mean it just says auto or something and not the name but if you press enter on auto the name will appear? If so that is normal.

I personally would put the two IDE drive on different leads. They will slow each other down. What IDE lead is it? There are different ones and if its the one you got with your dvd drive it might not be quick enough for the hard drive to run at its full dma mode. There is DMA66/100/133. I think that drive is DMA133 and the dvd drive will be either DMA66 or DMA100. Its more commonly known as ATA. ie ATA133.

The grade of lead is usually written on in the middle.

If your still having trouble try disconnecting the dvd drive and using both the cable select and master/slave jumpers on the drive. This is another little problem ive come accross. If I use my Samsung drive with my WD I need to use master/slave but if I have 2 WD drives I can only use cable select. God knows why!

By not detected in biso i mean its not there in bios and u cant change any settings for it, secondly i tried the drive on my older compaq p-3 based system and the drive was working fine there. Also i tried disconnecting the burner and just placing the hdd, then also it was the same prob.

If the drive definatly works and the IDE line is OK its going to be something either in BIOS or the jumpers. Whatever settings in BIOS are auto detected try inputting them manually. That way it should always look for exactly that.

Ive kind of misread your initial post. If im right it will always show in windows, this means BIOS is always detecting it otherwise it wouldnt show in windows.

Well in case of entering the values manually, I get the option to enter values only for PIO and UDMA, and for the rest like cylinder, blockmode etc, I get only 2 options, i.e., auto or disabled under user defined settings. Could there be some problem with the drive.

Thanks all u guyz for ur kind help, my problem is solved in a wierd way. Here`s how :
Earlier I tried making the samsung ide hdd master and the dvd burner slave, and that didn`t work. But then I removed the burner and just connected the samsung hdd as master it worked, then after this I connected back the burner as slave and now both r working fine. And the hard drive is not having problem right now.
But I still have one question to ask, that Since My ide cable was short I made the master-slave setting by jumpers only on both drive and still the port one of the ide cable is connected to the burner(slave) and port 2 to Samsung hdd(master), will that cause any slow performance on either the DVD burner or hdd?

i presume you mean the master is in the middle of the IDE cable and DVD-Burner (slave) connected to end of IDE cable ?

if i'm right then, no, performance will not be affected

it's just good practice and a good habit to setup IDE devices as C/SEL (cable select)
