I am pretty well a complete idiot where computers are concerned, but for five years I have somehow struggled on. However I now have a problem which I really don't understand.

My ISP is AOL (9), and have Windows 98SE.

My computers Systems Resources Available is playing me up and is causing my computer to grind almost literally to a halt. When first logging the SRA is around 60-70%, dropping to 40-50% when on the Internet. Gradually it dwindles to as low as 18% (record so far!!! )

My computer has a 256Mb memory.

I have tried removing all programmes I dare to take out (and understand). I have defragged, cleared everything out, etc etc, but still the problem carries on. One thing I have noticed is when I check what programmes I have running, REALPLAY is often indicated up to 15 times!!!!!! even though I haven't been near the programme. Rmoving them doesn't seem to make any difference to the SRA. If I log out of the Internet and return then return, the SRA increases...then starts dropping!!!

I have Avast Anti Virus (freebee) and the usual AOL Spyware.

Here is my present AOL 'SYSINFO' and you can see the SRA is at 46%. The rest is double dutch to me. Is there anything significant I should look for? Before logging off a few minutes ago it was 19%!!!

PLEASE, any replies most gratefully received, MUST be in words of one syllable!!! (LOL)

Arrgh! I just typed a massive reply and its gone and made it dissapear. *sigh*

    Hi, imperfector.

Before I begin my waffle again.

    i) You say you're low on resources but how is this affecting your computing? Is your system slowing down?? Can you be more specific to what your concerns are?
ii) What was the name of manufacturer you got the PC from.
iii) I've found that you can have programmes running without them appearing on the list of active programmes menu! A real drain!

    Alex

    Hi Alex

Thanks for the reply. I thought my posting explained in detail how it was effecting my PC. I can't really explain it any better. The PC just grinds to an almost halt. I had hoped someone could explain why I kept getting unwanted programmes from starting up.

To stop programs to start when ur computer starts...
go to RUN and type msconfig
under startup tab, uncheck any program which you dont want to start when your computer starts and then apply.
Also, if you have uninstalled programs and they are still coming then go to your programs folder and delete their remaining bits as well if they have left... Also download one registry cleaner to remove all the registry files of those programs.....
