The audio icon disappeared from the taskbar, it shows up in the notification area as 'past item'
and it appears to be in a folder. I've tried the usual steps of clicking 'always show' and 'place icon
on taskbar' - doesn't work. I have C-Media AC97 and tried to reinstall Realtek AC97 and at
the end of the installation it says Microsoft has not passed Windows logo testing.. How do I proceed to get my audio back? thanks

uninstall it, the reinstall it..You can also try system restore to an earlier date..
If that doesn't work, try to download the newest driver for it..

I've done all of those already and they dont work. Downloading the latest driver
for Realtek resulted in 'Realtek has not passed Windows logo testing'.
