I am planning on spending about 150-200 $ on a graphics card for my new computer. It runs at 1600x900 resolution (yah, not even 1080p). I was debating between a Radeon R9 270 and a 270x. Will the 270 be enough or should I go for the 270x? I wish to play games such as DotA 2 and Portal 2 (not BF4) on ultra settings at ~60 fps. I'm using an i5 4460.

Radeon R9 280 is much better and price is around 200$.

My budget is actually about $150, but I am willing to push it to $170...but not to $200. Remember, I don't care about BF4, nor do I care about 1080p. I'm gaming at 1600x900 (ancient tech) :p

Then R9 270 should be fine.

I would agree the 270 would be fine. I run a Radeon 7850, which I believe is pretty equal to the 270, and until the past month, I was running a 1600x900 monitor and had a smooth experience.

I'm sure it will be fine now, but what about future-proofing? In case I want to upgrade to 1080p or play BF4 or something. Will it be worth the extra cost? Or is the performance difference
    negligible?

In that case R9 280 is much better choice.

I just bought a 3gb Sapphire R9 280X for $165. It runs GTAV and BF4 at full HD flawlessly with settings on high/ultra. If you can find a used one that's still got warranty left on it, don't hesitate. Or even brand new it's a great card for its price.
