Here is the procedure to get a RAID going on an existing [Windows] OS:

First, boot the OS from the standard IDE controller. Install the Promise drivers, and make sure the RAID controller registers properly in the Device Manager. Reboot, and change the primary boot device in the system BIOS to the Promise RAID controller. Next, set up your hard drive both physically and in the RAID BIOS. Finally, boot into the OS. I don't think I'm missing any steps in there for a Promise Controller, but let me know how it goes.
