I recently installed the release candidate of Windows 7 on my Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop. All is wonderful except the sound. Installing the Dell-supplied driver, which says it is good for Vista as well as XP (I think Windows 7 uses Vista drivers- tell me if this is not always true)ends with the message "Device object not present, restart computer and run setup again"

I can't see this "Sigmatel AC97 Stac-something" device in device manager, so I'm thinking it's not a driver problem but a matter of Windows 7 not recognizing the onboard audio. This same driver always did the trick when I used WinXP.

My question is, how do I get the machine to see that there IS this audio device so that I can install the driver? Does it have anything to do with BIOS settings?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
