I am trying to decide how to upgrade. Are dual-processors really going to be that big of a deal in future games? I've heard right now they make virtually no difference. I am basically hoping that I can make a pc that will play most of the titles for the next 2 or 3 years. It seems to me if you bought a good cpu 2 years ago, you could still run pretty much any game with it (upgrading video cards and ram).

    So anyway, AMD or Intel?
What cpus are out now that would be enough for the next year or two?

Right now you'd be better off going AMD with a fast ass single core processor. Dual cores are good for multi-tasking and such but for straight up gaming it's not that much better.

Can this motherboard support Pentium D processors? I looked at the website and it didn't help. It's an LGA 775, but it doesn't say it can support it on the site.

Yes. Other companies use that chipset with dual-core support. You may need to flash the BIOS to get full support of the core, but otherwise, it should work.
