How can I tell what is inside a new computer? I am looking at several from acer that use Semprons, but I cannot tell what socket.

Depends with the Semprons. Likely it is Socket 754, but there is the possibility that some could be the Socket A (aka Socket 462) variety. A quick look physically inside the case would tell you what socket if there were a pair of (usually black) mounting brackets to which the heatsink is attatched.

Without opening it up, looking in Device Manager in Windows would give a real good idea as to the guts. The chipset would narrow down what socket was in use and what type of video card (PCIe or AGP).

More basic computers are more likely to lack the most bleeding edge technology or high-end stuff like SLI and possibly PCIe.
