    Hi everyone:
I am new to the forum and hope that someone out there can help. you are my last hope. I had an lg dvd burner which I decided to replace because it was gettting old and took forever to recognize a dvd. Also, the burn quality was deteriorating. I bought a new lg GSA-H55L Super Multi dvd drive. I installed it, making it the master on the secondary ide. There is also a cd burned on the secondary ide which I made slave. I booted up and the new dvd drive was nowhere to be seen in My Computer. I checked the bios and the bios couldn't detect it either. I then removed the new dvd burner and reinstalled the old one. It was immediately recongnized. I thought I had a defective burner so I brought it back to place of purchase and got another one, same make and model. I installed it and same problem, not recognize. Now I knew it wasn't a defective burner the first time. I decided to try switching the cd burner and dvd burner around, making the cd burner master and dvd burner slave on the secondary ide. All of the sudden both drives were recognized. It wasn't the configuration that I preferred but I decided that I would live with it. I don't run my computer 24/7 as some people do, I turn it off when not using it. The next day when I turned it on, again the dvd burner was gone. I contacted lg and they told me to update my bios, which I did, but it didn't solve the problem. So now I have a brand new dvd burner which I can't use because the computer won't recognize it, and I am at a loss as to what to do next. Somebody please help. I am running windows xp sp2, mobo is asus k8v-x se cpu is amd athlon 64 2800 1.8 ghz. Thank you

I can't believe LG told you to update your BIOS just because your O/S wouldn't detect the drive. That's a risky job and they could have at least guided you through the IDE and jumper configurations first...

Anyways, heres what you need to do. Unplug the new drive and the old drive.
After you've unplugged them, unscrew them from your case and take them out completely. Once you've taken them out, look to the rear of the drives. Each should have a small white (usually white) piece called a Jumper connected to a slot. It will look like this:

On the new drive, take the jumper out and connect it to the Master slot. On the old drive, take the jumper out and connect it to the Slave slot.

Now, IDE connections. Place your drives back into your case. Take an IDE cable and connect it to both drives, then connect it to your motherboard.
You BIOS should detect these new settings as should your O/S

Thanks for the response Scorps65, but I am aware of jumper settings. I bought all the components to my computer seperately: mobo, cpu, power supply, ram, video card, floppy and disk drives and built the computer myself. Without a hitch, I might add. Until I bought this new burner. I say this only to illustrate that I am not technically challenged, and the problem is not something as simple as jumper settings. Also, it isn't only Windows that doesn't see the burner, the bios does not detect it either. Maybe that's why LG told me to flash the bios. Do you have any other ideas? Anybody else?

Change the IDE ribbon for a new one.
IDE ribbons are prone to failure after being bent back and forth too many times. Your ribbon might be as
straight as me on a Friday night and there's the chance that one or more of the wires have severed or are close to being severed.
After replacing the ribbon, start fresh and install the DVD drive on it's own. If this is successful, then add the CD as a slave.
