I recently fried a motherboard. I was due for an upgrade anyway. I had an ASUS socket 754. If I go with another brand/chipset, will windows boot (if I use my existing HD)? If not I will have to reinstall Windows, but how could I retrieve the data first?

Just boot off your windows cd, do a repair and youll be able to boot into windows then just install your mobo drivers. A fresh windows install is recommended though.
