    Hi
I just found out that the price for a 512 MB PC 3200 DDR RAM from my local vendor is Rs 17,500 (~$388) while in crucial it says $60 !
There is defintely some wrong - there is a huge difference. I might as well buy from crucial with extra $30 for shipping to non US countries.
Can anyone suggest me some/many links where I can buy or view pricelist of RAM ?
    Thanks

Crucial seems to really mark up their prices. I have no problems with their quality, but you definitely pay out the nose.

I was looking at Crucial's prices and they just seem to run them higher than other good on-line stores. Not by a few bucks either. The expression I used isn't literal (money being pulled out of your nostril), just something like an uncomfortable way of paying more money.

PC2 is to denote DDR2 memory, which requires a DDR2 compatible motherboard. It's a 240-pin module vs the 184-pin for standard DDR (just PC----, 3200 in this case). DDR2 is more expensive because it's a newer memory technology and isn't as widely used yet.

Thank you. This has streamlined my search - 512 MB PC3200 DDR 400MHz. But a local vendor here (authorized HP reseller) is saying the cost is ~$388 (after converting from Indian Rs to $) - This is a huge amt considering the fact that crucial is selling it for $60. And yet you say they just seem to run them higher than other good on-line stores ???
If there are for less than $60 then how come my vendor here says $388 ? Wheres the difference - same config mentioned above in bold.

There could be several reasons why there is such a large price difference.

For instance, memory runs at a certain "rated" speed.

For example: 512MB PC3200 means that the memory has 512MB, and runs @ PC3200 (DDR400 (200MHz)) DDR = Double Data Rate (so think of it as twice the speed), PC3200 actually runs @ 200MHz but because of the technology, it doubles that speed to "DDR400" 400MHz.

Now, with memory there are different "speeds", such as Tras, Cas e.t.c these are the individual times that the memory is designed to communicate with different parts of the computer - obviously the faster the timings are on the memory, the faster the memory can run which means faster applications.

For example over here in the UK, the cheapest you can buy 512MB PC3200 DDR1 is about £30.00 however the timings are horribly slow: 4-8-8-10

each - indicates the speed as per one of the timings "names" such as: "Tras" (the time it takes transferring one bit of data to the CPU).

Basically i could Also buy 512MB PC3200 DDR1 that runs @ 2-2-2-5 (fastest on the market) which would cost me about £110 (over 3 x the amount).

So, you will find the cheap memory is very slow, and the fast memory is usually very expensive - due to the high-end technology being used.

And then you have the other possibility: that your Vendor is charging ALOT more than it should be compared to online retailers.

You will always find that online retailers / shops are Alot cheaper than in a local vendor / store / shop, this is because these online companies work out of one huge supply center / dock, allowing them to cut all the costs of marketing / shipment to shops, employing new staff e.t.c.

What i would do, is ask your "local vendor" for the "specifications" of the memory (ask that they tell you the Cas / Tras e.t.c), if they don't know what your on about - don't buy from them.

Also, your other problem is, that your going to have to use some Compaq (memory) compatible memory (pretty much just Compaq/HP memory) which they might be giving you a price for, as Compaq/HP memory is incredibly expensive.

Post back with how much you want to spend in US Dollars / UK Sterling with a site that will deliver to you and we can help you find what your looking for alot quicker.

    Thanks for your detailed explanation.
Yes the vendor from whom I bought the CPU is an authorized dealer in HP-Compaq business machines. I guess he is selling HP peripherals too.
I cannot afford HP's price. The CPU itself cost a lot. His price for 1GB RAM was a little less than the entire CPU cost I paid for !

Looking at crucial, $60 for 512MB DDR PC3200 400MHz RAM is good I feel.
Im ready to buy from crucial - many say it is of good quality. But they charge $30 for shipping alone for non US countries - free to US cities - with that I can get a 256 MB RAM !

Wait, I misread your original post...sorry about the confusion. $60 for 512MB of PC3200 is very good. I don't know why HP is marking it up so much. I could possibly understand $100, but $388 is insane.

Now, I did check Crucial website, and I didn't see the PC3200 512MB stick for $60 or anywhere around there. I did see a 256MB PC3200 stick for a little under that price, however. You might wanna double check before you buy.

I'm not sure how it compares, but I'm told that Amazon has some decent shipping, but I've not shopped there before.

Crucial site - 512 MB DDR PC3200 RAM - I dont know if you can get this link : http://www.crucial.com/store/listpa...c7100+Series+Convertible+Minitower.&submit=Go
    512MB - CT405278 - DDR PC3200 CL=3 NON-ECC UNBUFFERED - $US 58.19
BTW, I've never seen any BUFFERED RAM - Is there any difference ?

Buffered, and ECC is for server applications I think.

I know it's odd, but 'buffered' RAM is referred to as Registered. ECC is Error Checking on the RAM itself. This slows things down a little, but for server applications, that's infinitely better than errors. Registered and ECC aren't the same thing, but I'm struggling to get a good definition for Registered. It's not uncommon to see them together, but you can find Registered DIMM's out there.

The price is decent but the latency is pretty poor, try looking for something with a latency of about 2.5 or 2, you may want to stay away from Ebay unless you can guarentee the seller has an excellent rating and the price is worth it without being too cheap. You can try this site for Indian companies: http://www.searchindia.com/search/Computers/Companies/Retailers/index.shtml

i know this goes against the whole newegg and zipzoom loyalty thing and im a dedicated customer but if you want to find awesome prices jus go to pricegrabber.com, they even have slot 1 processors and branch off into a whole network of stores including our favorites, ive seen 512mb pc3200 i think kingston for 35$ id recommend on there looking for corsair XMS, they have a model that has god latency at T1 command rate and its a gig for 103.00$ in my opinion kick ass price. but look at the site at least, i think you'd like it.
