    Image file conversion.

A friend of mine has a prized photograph on his PC that has somehow ended up with a .Mix extension - this realistically means that he now cannot view the said file! I was round at his home this morning trying to help him convert it into a 'viewable' format, so that he can print it off. Our...

    Network boot?

Well, trigger a boot remotely from my laptop - I suppose. I once read somewhere (I'm sure) that a boot can be triggered from one machine on a network to boot up another machine on the same network. Not at all sure how it works, but apparently, a 'packet' is sent from one machine on the...

    Network boot?

I have my XP laptop (downstairs) networked with my XP desktop (upstairs). Is it possible to boot the desktop PC from the laptop - or vice-versa? Thanks in advance, David.

Need clone partitions SATA to ATA not with ghost...so how ?

I can only suggest that you try and get hold of a copy of Acronis True Image. You should be able to pick up an early version (say, version 8) for just a few pounds on eBay. I think it would do the job. I have used it for ages and it's a great disk-imaging program.

Strange reboot with an MSI P35

I take it you've checked the processor and heatsink are seated correctly (thermal paste applied, etc)? It too, could be something not configured correctly in the BIOS - for example, is Spread Spectrum 'disabled' ? I'm told it should always be disabled for better stability and performance...

    New build suggestions

Think of doing this build for a friend. She's not into gaming, but likes surfing the Net & doing video work. Any suggestions would be welcome & is it a value for money rig? I have told her she might be able to get these specs on a ready made system for the price it would cost for me to buy...

    XP won't hibernate.

No big deal, but I had XP SP2 set to hibernate after 5 hours. I had left the PC turned on for 6 hours, then went upstairs to where the PC is and saw that the monitor screen was blank (all fans still spinning in the case, etc), I rebooted and XP powered up as normal - no problems. I have...

Desperate Need of Help - Harddrive Issues!!

Just a thought - and I'm stabbing in the dark a bit! Did you enable the HDDs in BIOS when you swapped everything over to the new case. I recently had the problem of HDDs not being recognized when I put in a new motherboard (although this is not quiet the same thing in your case).

    password problems

I have little knowledge of laptops, per say, but perhaps you could try removing the CMOS battery for 1 Minute to reset the BIOS then replace the battery. Make sure you remove the 'normal' rechargeable battery when you do this. I hope others can offer more help.

Is SATA now the way to go?

Thinking of doing a build for a friend. I'm inclined to think that I should be looking at SATA connected devices, as opposed to IDE (ATA), as they seem to be the way forward now - or so I understand. Am I likely to pay more for a motherboard geared more to SATA and the accompanying HDDs...

Problem with new build, please help!

Just a thought - have you got 'Spread Spectrum' disabled in BIOS? For better performance & stability, Spread Spectrum should ALWAYS be disabled. Also, have you checked the Event Viewer for information about what might be the cause of the problem when you get the the error message when...

    Motherboard Replacement

I think an Asus M2NPV-VM motherboard should be fine with what you have, but there are probably quiet a few others that would be just as compatible. I have an Asrock board in one of my PCs and I'm happy with it. However, my local computer shop's owner does not rate them at all. He used to...

    System Hangs

It might be an idea to download the latest version of 'SpeedFan'. It has a utility within it that will give you a detailed online report as to the 'health status' of your HDD/s. This may proved helpful in determining if they are on the point of failure. Here's the link below...

    Failed updates!

I haven't actually looked in the Event Viewer, but all I get when I try to download the updates, is that they have 'failed' to install. The XP disk is authentic as far as I can tell. Its passed all the tests on the Microsoft website and has been validated by them. Furthermore, when I first...

    Failed updates!

It generally seems difficult to download Microsoft updates on my XP desktop. In fact, the only time they have downloaded recently was when I installed a new motherboard. Now, I have no problem with 'failed' updates on my newish laptop, but the desktop seems to now permanently fail as far as...
