That is very true. CDE, KDE, GNOME, and XFCE are DESKTOP ENVIRONMENTS (the DE in KDE). All dekstop environments have window managers built in. Window managers are simply the subsystem that displays windows and buttons and anything graphical interface related to the screen.

You may need to boot with noacpi and noapic but without acpi, you won't have dual core.

Why does the kernel need to be user friendly? The user does not interface with the kernel in any direct manner, other than compiling or updating. I think you are confusing the kernel with the whole of the OS.
