Best Anti-Virus Program out there?

I've been a fan of norton for about three years, but when 2003 ed. missed 4 viruses that a 2002 version picked up, and both were fully updated, I got a little irratated. :mad:

Anyways, what's currently the best anti-virus software available? I've heard good things about McAffee 2004.

I used to like Norton, but had to change it because my system would slow down to a halt when in use! I'm not sure if it’s improved recently? Never tried McAfee so couldn’t say how good or bad it is!

The one I currently use is the free version of AVG from http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php it’s not the best but its free! :good: I find it to be good at detecting viruses but not removing all of them!

I just got Mcafee 2004 fire wall Plus and virus scan, free, with my DSL from Verizon (with MSN Premium).
Upon scanning my computer, it detected those viruses which AVG was only able to dectect but could not remove.
Apart from good reviews, I read on the interent, regarding Mcafee, the thing I liked the most was that both the fire wall and the anti-virus put togather tookup very little space and resources.
I run a Pentium III 500MHz changed to 1Ghz, with, I think, 100 FSB. I tried the Norton 2004 trial version, but it took a lot of my system memory, which would at times cause my system to crash.
So, considering this, and your experience regarding Norton, I think Mcafee would be a good choice both interms of system resources and anti-virus capabilites.
But then again there could be better options which I don't know about.
 
there are a lot out there....a few no one has mentioned are kaspersky, panda i have used them both and also norton which i currenty use.....norton is the most complicated but it always detects viruses and it is always a lot easier to use than most others...but then these are all personla viewpoints...value for money would definetely have to be AVg because it is free...but the only problem there is it doesnt remove viruses....which a lot of others do...the only thing that bugs me is that most firewaals need to be configured in order to access broadband and i havent found one that hasnt had to be configured yet....
 
Well Its really Hard to choose... BUT!

I hate MCFEE :swear: I have always had trouble with it. I had problem with mutiple versions of mcfee, and i dot instend on having anymore!

Norton :( used to be one of my favorite, until i had to a problem with my pc and scanned it and it siad my pc was clean. I dont remember the the way i got rid of the infection, but i do remember i had to overwrite alot of system files from back ups i made a week prior. This has happened plenty of times. I dont know how many times ive had to restore windows to a previous state. I wouldnt recommend it to advanced users. :confused:

I've had a really good history with AVG Pro 7.0.338. :good: the GUI isnt all that interesting BUT :eek: AVG Anti-Virus 7.0 is a great program and has received the coveted VB100% rating and is certified by ICSA Labs.

The VB 100% logo is awarded to anti-virus products that:

Detect all "In the Wild" viruses during both on-demand and on-access scanning in Virus Bulletin's comparative tests.

Generate no false positives when scanning a set of clean files.

And if you feel thats not enough AVG also comes with a firewall ( Read about it here )


PC-cillin has a very reliable program that i only got 2 use for 2 months or so.
I had no trouble with this program. I disliked the GUI but looks isnt everything much like the case with AVG. PC-Cillin comes with an inegrated firewall and In Virus Bulletin's tests with live viruses, previous versions of PC-cillin earned the coveted VB100% percent rating in five of its six most recent Windows tests.

Now This is my favorite!

BitDefender Professional comes with a very effective inegrated Firewall wich leaves it toe to toe with pc cillin.
I really enjoy the GUI.

Its a bit expensive but i think the best Symantec's Symantec Antivirus 10 Corporate ED its has more features than norton, detects more, deletes more, uses far less resources and doesnt annoy you with out of date definitions!
 
Hi I myself use Avast Antivirus used to use the free one but I like it so much that I have just paid for a 2 year licence, also have seen lots of other antiviruses installed on computers that I have had to go and look at and found viruses still on the systems, have ran Avast left it for a week on test, and the one's I have installed it on, have all now registered for the key to run it, have even had their friends come and ask for it, also updates every other day or sooner if problem found, also good backup and forum. :good:
 
id recommend AVG personal, beautiful program, as for a firewall id use sygate personal or zonelabs

best of all they're all free
 
I think avg is the best, there proberbly is more people in the world who uses norton antivirus becouse norton is so well known they automaticly think that norton is the best, i have tried norton antivirus, and it made my computer a nervous wreck.

i know, i will put a poll up, avg v norton, see which one is the most popular.
 
Good idea :good: , my votes already in !! Everyone from newbies to (so called) experts (that ive spoke to) say Norton dont cut it ! ! !
 
With all antiviruses, infection is still possible on Windows systems, that's just the way it is. I've worked with every antivirus listed in this thread so far, and I've seen every one let virii past from time to time. In my experiences, probably the two best antiviruses in real-world use are:
...although Sophos is really only geared towards businesses.
