Best linux for a dumbass like me?

Last time i tried linux, i was using Mandriva linux 2006.0, i must say it looks quite nice, had lots of usefull apps and good fetures, but it was so hard to even install somthing, i cant even install drivers :\. Is there any Versions of Linux than are easy to use, prefrebly for a noob like me, and is easyer to install applications etc..?
 
I haven't used Mandriva myself, although driver installations are certainly different (it's something you'll have to run as root), SuSe is pretty easy to setup.
 
hmm, it also seems that mandriva is the best of all linux distors? is this true? whats better about mandriva than others?

Whats good about SuSe? what features does it have?
 
SuSE is a very unstable distribution and you'll end up tearing your hair out.

Want good hardware detection, easy of use and stability?

You're spot on - Ubuntu is an African word which means 'humanity to others'.

Ubuntu uses GNOME, Kubuntu uses KDE, Xubuntu uses XFCE. If you prefer KDE to GNOME, you should download Kubuntu instead.
 
GNOME and KDE are just the desktop environments. You're free to choose whichever one you want. KDE is funky, customisable, which is what Mandriva uses.

GNOME has a bit more of a corporate appeal to it. Although I don't like GNOME sometimes, Ubuntu makes GNOME look fantastic. Theres lots of different themes/styles so don't be put off by boring buttons if you see any.

Driver installation is quite awkward, it really depends on what hardware you want installing. If you have any problems installing drivers then post here.

If you don't want to wait a few weeks for an Ubuntu CD, I can send you one via post if you like.
 
If you have broadband (which I believe you do) and a CD-burner, you can just download and burn the ISO image. It's much faster that way.

I did wonder! I thought those disks are aimed at people who cant download large files, slow connection or crappy limits.
 
I tried installing SLAX KillBill version, its installed on my memory stick, but i cant get it to boot, even tho i selected in bios that first boot device should be USB HDD :s, so why aint it booting?
 
Yeap, clicke do usb pen drive, formated the drive when it came up, then it started copying all the files ot the drive.
 
Your particular Pen Drive might need USB-ZIP or USB-FDD emulation to boot from. Is there such an option in your BIOS to do so?
 
yes, i selected them all, first boot device, second and third, was USB HDD, ZIP and FDD. On the Verifying DMI pool data screen, i seen somthing saying USB MP3 PLAYER as thats what i am using, it should work as i can use it normaly as a USB HDD.
 
I've found the boot up a bit hit and miss.

I installed SLAX onto my mp3 player and it booted up fine on a computer a College. However, I couldn't get it to boot up on my computer at home. I was using the same mp3 player and the same installation as the one I used in College.

With that in mind, It's probably got something to do with your BIOS settings. I use an eMachines computer, so I am not entirely suprised that it didn't work. You will rarely hear me say this, but here goes: Perhaps you should update the BIOS :eek:
 
whats point of updating the bios, its not like its going to make the mp3 player boot, the bios knows there is a generic mp3 player there, i fail to see what a bios update will do as all the updates are for are to fix bugs, not add new fetures?

I agree. I think the SuSe install is probably the most intuitive one around, but past that, I never could use the OS for more than a few minutes because it would lock up on me. I run CentOS, and that's okay for an install, so if you're moderately schooled in the world of the PC, this could be a viable option. However, based on the Mandrake past of Mandriva, it's a safe bet. I haven't tried Ubuntu myself, but from what I hear, it (or it's variants Xubuntu and Kubuntu) would be a very good bet.
 
Ok, bringing this thread back, i have Tried Kubuntu, i was wanting to settle with Kubuntu, but Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu seems to suck really bad, the stuff you can do with the desktop, the look is ok, but cant install apps ffom the net, gotta use repository thing or w/e its called, and it wont even work with my NEC DVD-RW, either DVD-RW is crippled or Ubuntu,Kubuntu, Xubuntu dont support it :\

I need somthing better than Ubuntu,Xubuntu,Kubuntu, dont want Cent OS or SuSE, or Mandriva, tried Mandriva 2006.0.
