Best linux for a dumbass like me?

Yes kubuntu does suck. I tried it, won't go back to it.

If you want something easy use PC-BSD, just named the most user friendly *nix somewhere on the net. No time to verify that claim.

Or try desktopBSD, but I would hold off for a few months because there will be a new version comming out with some really good improvements.

This is just me but..... poop on linux, I use BSD :tricky:

Have a look at distrowatch. lots of useful information and lists every damn linux/BSD/other OS
 
Hmmm, i been thinking, you know this ubuntu repository thing, does it have limewire in it and apps like that?. Also, i wont need to compile anything will i?.

Is there a list of all the apps in the repositories i can look at on the net?
 
here you can do that for all debian packages.

I don't see limewire but it is gnutella compatible and there are other clients that can connect to the same sources. You don't need limewire to connect to those sources.

BTW, limewire is available on freeBSD, PC-BSD and DesktopBSD. :devil:

It can look like wharever you want it to. It runs all the same window managers as linux so you can run KDE, gnome, enlightenment, XFCE, etc. Also, PC-BSD and desktopBSD are based on freeBSD so the core OS is the same.

BSD also can run linux binaries if you want to run proprietary linux software in BSD.

both use KDE by default but I have E17 installed on my desktopBSD setup.

Also, if you want to know what software you can install look at freshports. Right now there are 15,521 packages available and it grows by 5-15 per day.

Yes but it is not a good idea. Every linux and BSD OS has a package manager that handles all software installation/upgrades/deinstallation. If you download software off the internet it MUST be source code that needs to be compiled by you manually. This is not a good option and you need to keep up on security flaws, etc for that piece of software because the package manager cannot help you if you do stuff behind it's back.

If the software you are looking to install is listed in the package manager then why would you want to do it manually when the package manager will do everything for you? If it is not available then source code is the option with the exception of proprietary (pay for) software which will have it's own installer to take care of everything for you.

Downloading software off the internet and manually installing it is for windows users, not unix users. Once you get used to a package manager you will understand why this method is far supperior to the windows way. If software gets out of date or has flaws, a package manager will let you know that it is and do the work for you. It is like Windows update but for EVERYTHING that is installed on your system, not just the OS. You can update every piece of software to the newest version with ONE CLICK.

Maybe I can find a good guide to help you out.

On limewire site, there is a download for linux, why download that if your on Windows?

I don't understand the question.

Limewire is going open source and the BSD version is 4.9, not the 4.12.4 that you download from the site. Probably in beta but it is most likely better than 4.12
