Boot problems in XP.

Hi, all.

Up until yesterday, my XP machine was running perfectly! What has happened? Well, I installed an all-in-one Lexmark 1200, printer/scanner/copier.

Ever since I installed the above mentioned, I've encountered several problems. Firstly, if XP boots-up, it does so very slowly, then when I go to close down XP, the PC just reboots! Additionally, I can't put the PC into 'Hibernate' (just reboots). The PC will not go into 'Standby'. I can't help but feel that this printer/scanner/copier has caused all these problems. I'm trying a full format of the HD and will reinstall XP and hope that does the trick!

Any ideas on this one, guys?

I think I would try to uninstall the printer first before having to reinstall XP.
If that printer IS your problem, Then remove it first. Did you scan for a Virus
or a Trojan? you might have something else going on in the back ground..

Okay, I may have got it sorted. I've had a couple of BSOD relating to device driver issues. I've reinstalled the printer and checked that all my hardware is seated correctly. The PC actually shuts down now! I also tested the memory using Memtest overnight and it came out error-free. As you said, device driver issues can be a real pain! I hope things are sorted now. Thanks for your input.
 
Can you lets us know what your problem was if and when you find it ?
Its always good to know these problems for next time..

Yes, sure. I spoke too soon when I said I may have got it sorted - it's acting up again! I think I'll remove devices one-by-one and test that way. I have just read that USB devices can cause a lot of problems. I might also Memtest again, just to be sure - albiet memory came up clean last time.

From the huge amount I have read on this particular problem I'm having, it leans towards a device driver problem - which, as we have said, can be a hard problem to solve.

So you did a fresh install, and you are still having these problems ? Did this do this Right after the fresh install ? I mean Not, install nothing afterwards..
If it did , then you have a major hardware issue.. Only hook up the main things to see if it one of them. monitor/keyboard/mouse...Thats it..
 
Yes, it still acted up after a fresh install. I can't help but feel that this is a driver (printer-related) issue, as my PC was running to perfection before I installed the new Lexmark All-In-One X1270 printer. I'll take out devices one-by-one and see if that resolves things. It might be 'buggy' printer software?

No, it didn't. However. I was having trouble with an old version of Acronis True Image version 8.0 - the application was not detecting any of my HDs. I've uninstalled it & replaced it with the newer Acronis True Image version 9.0.

I've rebooted after reinstalling the printer & the new Acronis & PC boots up much faster than it did -and no BSOD! Could have been a corrupted version of the old Acronis True Image? Anyway, I've fully backed up the full system & I'll just have to see how things go when I next boot up. Fingers crossed! I'll keep you posted.
 
So you are using a Windows XP setup disk ? OR You are using a back copy then?

If you are not using a setup disk, and you are using a backup disk instead Then you are not getting a fresh install each time. You are just getting the same problem from before..
You have to install XP from a Setup disk...By using a backup copy, you are just taking all the problems and Viruses or whatever and reinstalling all over again..

I did a fresh install using my XP set-up disk. I then took off the old version of Acronis True Image (which was giving problems - not recognizing HDDs) and installed a newer version of Acronis (with which, I have now backed up the whole system). From that point on, the PC is going fine - no more BSOD - XP loads much faster and now shuts down fine.

I can only think that the old Acronis (version 8) was causing the problem - but I can't be sure. Touch wood - the PC has been fine for the last couple of days and I hope it continues!
 
IF a BSOD appears next time then write down the error it displays...Also, restart and check the EVENT Viewer for the Errors..
