Broadband keeps cutting off

Do I need to go wireless as present set-up is not working - keeps cutting off.
I have only been on Broadband for a couple of weeks. I was so looking forward to it but am very disappointed that it just doesn't seem to work. Only stays connected for a few minutes and then I get " TalkTalk Assist and Go" saying it needs to diagnose my connection. This takes anything from 2 to 10 minutes! Most frustrating when I in the middle of posting something!

I have had a telephone engineer in to look at my system and he says it looks ok and should work. I have also telephoned TalkTalk Customer Services and been told they cannot see any problems - have I cleared the cookies lately!!!! ( :doh: but of course I have).

It has been suggested that as my only incoming telephone line is downstairs in the hallway and my computer is upstairs in the back room that this might be the problem and it might help if I get a wireless router.

I am considering this but might I still keep getting disconnected because it seems pointless to pay about £100 for this equipment if it doesn't resolve the problems. Also, do I need an electric supply near router. Friends says you don't need an electric point as telephone socket is all that is needed. I thought I would need electricity too.

how do you currently connect ?
(do you use a modem or a router) using a router is by far the easiest way to connect any OS to the net

good point, are you using microfilters in every telephone socket in use on th ADSL line ?
wireless ruoters are cheaper online (this router has a wireless connection of 270mb/s which is fast, but it can also handle up to 24mb/s download from the net (so you dont need to upgrade you router as download speeds increase

yes, as a router will require power
 
Thats very intresting, because AOL UK is now owned by the Carphone Warehouse, and I am on AOL and I am getitng all these disconnections, but i have had them for about a year now :( and AOL cant see anything wrong with the line :\

the only think i can suggest that you may not have tried, make a log of when net is off, and try to link the downtime with other events (e.g. connect a phone without a filter, then when anyone uses the phone the broadband goes off)

Thanks for all that info.
I connect with a modem at the moment and am still undecided if I should keep it or not, I am hoping things will improve enough to keep it as it is with the new cable. I have just had a tempory cable (supplied by a BT engineer ;)) installed from incoming phone socket to modem as I was told the cable I was using was not the right one. I also installed a 'professional' quality microfilter and since doing this Broadband is not cutting off quite so frequently. Also, cannot associate any of the times the link goes down with any other event but I am still keeping a check.

Yes, TalkTalk-Carphone Warehouse-Onetel all the same and now AOL as well?
Interesting that you are now getting cut off too. Also had problem with TalkTalk and their email service going down - no emails for several days and I am told not the first time it has happened.
Like you I have been told by TalkTalk that the line is ok so not their problem (?) :confused:

I have three telephones in my house - NTL engineer said this should not cause any problem.

perhaps installing top quality (name brand) filters in the other telephone outlets in use

Edit: as the problems decreased by adding a quality filter

BTW: what modem is it, is it an Acatel ST 330 ?, & what speed of service did you subscribe to ?

Modem is a TalkTAlk HUAWEI SmartAX882 and speed of service is supposed to be 8 meg but I am told by friend on same supplier that it's often less than that!

how are you connecting the medem to your system ?

  • Ethernet
  • Both
it is far far easier to connect it via ethernet

that' the thing about broadband, they are NOT guarenteed speeds, they are theoretical maximum speeds (which are never actually achived)[ot]i don't know the equation to calculate how fast a connection will be[/ot]

Connecting via Ethernet.

Was reading some blog about modem v router and it said modems are useless and it's much better to use a router.

Anybody got experience using either and advice?
I am really not sure whether to try router but if it's not any better then I have wasted my money. :confused:

yeah, routers are best, modems are ok, but most ISP's give modems away free cause there cheap, a connection with a router is by far the easiest install & manage and most routers come with an integrated firewall, gateway (to use VoIP) l3 / 4 / 5 port switch (so to add another system, you just need another NIC & an RJ45 cable)

i use a router with linux[ot]if you want to try linux then a router is almost essential[/ot]
 
Hi all

I gave up trying to sort it myself and called in a computer man who seemed to know what he was talking about.
He changed the Modem (TalkTalk HUAWEI SmartAX882) for a much simpler looking modem - Speedtouch 330.
It works beautifully, the cost was only £10 instead of £29.99 paid for the one I purchased from Talktalk -
and that was their cheapest one.
I have since got a Speedtouch 330 from ebay for my sister - cost £2.50!
I think I will probably put the SmartAX882 on ebay to see if I can get anything back for it :rolleyes:

Did you ever tell them customer support people that they're idiots for asking if you have cleared your cookies? If not, you really should. Never miss a chance to flame retarded customer support/service. Or write them a scorn-filled, angry feedback email telling them how full of crap they are. Customer support is one of the most important things in any ISP company.
