Buying new memory...

I soon plan on buying a gig or RAM for my computer in a month or so and was wondering when I do so, should I discard my old stick of 512MB? I've heard it's not a good idea to mix different brands of memory. I plan on getting 2X512MB dual channel, but not sure which manufacture. I now have a stick of Simpletech 512MB.
So should I just put aside my old RAM when i get the new stuff or is it ok to leave it hooked up?

So back to my question about whether or not i should get rid of my old stick of memory. or does that not really matter? any idea?
 
I think you should leave it in if you can it's just more ram
but if you start getting conflicts liek not being able to boot just pull it out

I have used all kinds of combinations of ram in my computers. Right now I have a server that uses one 256 stick of pc3200 ddr400 and one 512 stick of pc2100 and the extra ram helps a lot even though its slower and a different type. In fact, the motherboard won't boot without at least 400mhz ram. More ram is better, just put the better stick in the first slot.

edit: if you have problems, you could always take it out later, right?
