Computer management services keep disabling

Can someone please help. In my stupidity I closed a lot of stuff down using the task manager because my system was going really slow.
Since then I've had loads of problems. Firstly I lost all my desktop themes which I have now got back. But now all of the services in the computer management keep disabling everytime I reboot. Hence I have to manually start my firewall, antivirus. I have tried to reinstall my internet conection because that also vanished but it says the modem can not be found. Any ideas?:confused:
 
Right Click 'My Computer' > Manage > Click 'Services' down the left hand side.

You will now see all of the services available to Windows. Find a service you want to edit (Windows Firewall for example) and right click > Properties.

Now you can specify whether this service is disabled/automatic/manual.

Hi, thanks for your help. However, I have done that several times but it doesn't seem to save them. Everytime I restart the pc I have to go back in amd do them again. Would creating a system restore point be good when I have activated all the services I need?
 
Prehaps you have set a selective startup in MSCONFIG.

Start > Run > Type 'MSCONFIG'

Make sure that the 'normal startup' option is selected
 
Ah thats it. I have selected that in an attempt to speed it up as there is always so many processes running in the backgroud. Ok I will change this and see what happens. Is there anyway I can stop programs running at start up from a single list like config?
 
oh so that will let me select what starts up and runs in the background also?
I'll give all that a try when I get home and download that if I manage to reconnect to the internet. Thanks for your help, i'll let you know the outcome!

You can use CCleaner to modify the startup options.
You can alter the background services using the computer management console. There's no need to alter MSCONFIG at all - leave it at 'normal startup'
 
Thats what I was going to ask next. All of the above worked but there is still over 70 processes running once everything has booted up. So I can change them in the services bit of the computer management?
 
Services are different from processes, they run in the background and you can't stop them using the Task Manager. Use the services method megamaced said to change startup/disable of services (msconfig services tab), and use task manager/msconfig to control what processes start.

At the end of the day, Windows is a bloated operating system. Disabling various background services can have negative effects. Please excuse the propaganda coming up, but I think you should have a look at Linux.... :)
