Dead PSU?

Thanks for the reassurance, but those sounds you speak of are making me wonder. I was only a few feet away from my computer when it happened, and I did not hear any loud or noticeable sound. All of a sudden the computer just powered down and wouldn't start back up. I didn't have to check any connections, of course, because only a few minutes before it started up just fine. So, the two things that led me to believe it was the PSU were 1) nothing would turn on at all, not even fans or LEDS, and 2) earlier that day my computer sounded like a car without a muffler, and I'm not sure if the CPU fan is even capable of being that loud, so I figured it must've been the PSU fan. But I really don't think I heard any type of loud sound when it died. Is it possible for them to die silently?
 
I've had a PSU fan go before and it was fairly loud on it's way out. As for silent dying, it depends on what gives out. Like if one wire or trace goes out, it's likely not to do anything but stop.
 
Wow, you're not going to believe this. I got my new PSU today. Put it in - nothing. I think I could've cried. Out of nowhere, I decided to try the power cord that came with the PSU instead of the one I already had. It worked. So I guess my power cord was just faulty. But, I'm still glad I got a new PSU because the old one was the part that was getting extremely loud. So, I guess that day that I kept trying to figure out what was making that sound (last Friday), my power cord just suddenly stopped working. Odd...
 
Hmm, I tried the old power cord again, and it worked just fine. So, considering that the old PSU was getting really loud, I think it did actually die. So why at first tonight did the computer not work? Not sure, maybe I wasn't pushing the cord in all the way or something. Oh well, I'm not going to try to figure it out, I'm just glad it works.
 
I didnt think of the cord not being all the way in the psu.
If you listen closely it makes a noise when you push it in sometimes!
Its why the new psu didnt work Im condused about!

Well I'm bored right now so I'll explain it to you. When I first tried it, it didn't work. I tried redoing all front case connections, just in case. Still nothing. One time, though, when I pushed the power button, it came on, and then went right back off again. That's what made me think that it worked okay, there was just a loose connection somewhere. So, I switched power cords then, and that's when it worked. Then, I tried the old one again, and it worked just fine! So there are two possibilities here. Either:

1) My PSU never died at all, and for some reason all last week I just started not pushing my power cord in all the way, like a new habit for some reason. In that case, I didn't NEED a new PSU, but I'm still glad that I got one because of how the loud the old one was. Or...

2) My PSU did die last week, but for some reason just last night I wasn't pushing it in all the way at first, but once I switched cords I did. That seems more likely, because I doubt that EVERY time I tried it last week I wasn't pushing the cord in all the way.

Have you ever taken out a video card while the computer was running ? And wasn't aware of it ?

....I did !!!

I'm pretty sure that's the dumbest thing I've ever done.

At that time I had killed my pentium 200 (among with other things....like my board for instance !) so I was stuck with a 166 (that was in the pentium II era)
 
Or not put ramsticks in properly and hit the on switch.
Ive forgotton to plug in the cpu fan too. The heatsink was boiling, I even got a little red mark on the end of my finger! But the cpu held out fine!
