It generally seems difficult to download Microsoft updates on my XP desktop. In fact, the only time they have downloaded recently was when I installed a new motherboard. Now, I have no problem with 'failed' updates on my newish laptop, but the desktop seems to now permanently fail as far as downloading updates is concerned. I've scoured the Net for supposed 'fixes' but none of them seem to work. Can anyone offer some help on solving the problem?

    Thanks in advance,

    David.

What does it say when you try to get the updates ?Does it give you a reason?
Most of the time, If you can't get any updates from Microsoft , Then it is because you don't have a legal copy of XP or what ever OS you are running.

I haven't actually looked in the Event Viewer, but all I get when I try to download the updates, is that they have 'failed' to install. The XP disk is authentic as far as I can tell. Its passed all the tests on the Microsoft website and has been validated by them.

Furthermore, when I first installed the new motherboard a few weeks ago, updates were downloading fine with the same XP disk setup. It's just over, say, three weeks back that I've been having problems.

Looking on various help sites, lots of people seem to be having similar problems when downloading updates.

Rollback those drivers you have installed to the previous one and see if you can install updates after that.
