File transfer speed

Searched the forum, didn't find any thread corresponding to my question. So here goes:
I've sent a file from a pc to a mac and the transfer speed is a steady 1.14 MB/s, now my network speed is 54Mbits/s which is if I'm right 54/8=6.75 MB/s ... so why is my file transfer 1/6th of the speed it should be?

Errr... then maybe I'm wrong, but isn't there a difference between Megabytes and Megabits? Like each byte is 8 bits--- ?
My network speed is 54 Megabits per seconds... Is that right?
 
Are you sure you are connected at 54MB? check the network status, it should show you your connection speed!

I'm guessing your using Wireless?
 
8Mbps = 1MB/sec Yes there are 8 bits in a byte. If you are transfering at 1.14 then your internet connection speed is 9.12Mbps.

There could be many factors affecting file transfer from computer to computer just as much as there are with the internet. Unless there is some information about your setup and the hardware you are using I can't tell you anything.

If by "PC" you mean "Windows PC", then yeah. You're using SMB to transfer files, which is moderately inefficient. However, it doesn't explain the amount of overhead you're dealing with here. In actuality, it sounds like you might be connected over 802.11b (11MiB) instead of 802.11g (54MiB). Is your AP in b/g mixed mode?
