Guys, I'm back. Where should I start

Got Linux RedHat 9 Shrike and extracted the iso images onto my HD. Took a while.

Should I get a bigger HD? I'm only using like 4 gigs or so of my primary 19gig plus 2 gigs of my 2.4GB storage slave drive.

Well, first of all, my opinion of Red Hat is not very high. To be honest, I think it's a bloated piece of crap compared to most other Linux distros. If I was you, I'd check out one of these distros instead, which will all run better and carry more features than RH/Fedora:

Mandriva -- Formerly known as Mandrake
Kubuntu -- Available in 'Live' and 'Install' versions
Suse -- Now owned by the formiddable Novell
Overclockix -- Highly tweaked version of Knoppix. Boot with knoppix26 dma!
 
I don't know what Novell will do (or massacre) with SuSe, but it's definitely one of the friendliest distros I've used if 9.1 is any indication. (Novell Netware is my least favorite OS, outside of WinME, so, yes, I don't care for the company.) I know for awhile, Novell was offering free DVDs of SuSe 9.1, but I haven't seen any HotDeals lately.

I haven't used the latest Mandrake, but that'd be my other pick besides SuSe in terms of friendliness.

Novell's OS sucked, and they knew it. But their network solutions have always been very stalwart, so the marriage of Suse and Novell was a natural consolidation. It's actually resulted in a stronger Linux solution, and likely a future for Novell that Netware never could have given them. At least, IMHO. :)

P.S. - If you think SuSE9.1 was sweet, try 9.2 sometime :)
 
I agree Red Hat is not the best to get your feet wet. I recommend Mandrake 10.1, the install was painless plus you can download a pdf version of the starter manual, print it, and have it next to you while you install. Mostly painless.

Suse was not bad either. Last I tried Suse was with 8.2 Pro. I went out and actually bought the boxed version since I was very curious about linux. But my heart stayed with Mandrake.

They have the starter and the reference (command line) manuals in pdf form. I took the time to print it (along with the expense). I am of the old school where I need the printed manual next to me.....

I liked it so much, I actually bought a hard copy. My way of saying, "thanks d00d!" It's a great reference. :)
