HDD is restarting

My problem is probably linked to the fact that im running very low on c drive space(which has my windows). My HDD is just shutting off and turning back on while im on it. Its not in any particular program, it has happened while i was on the internet and on my desktop and while playing battlefield 2. I had to do an edit to this halfway through just b/c my hdd restarted.

So what I want to do is to take from my D drive and give to C, b/c my D 9.25 gigs while my C currently has 64mb. Which leads to another problem, I used to have 700mb of free space in C and now it changes every day. For example yesterday I had 83mb free. Or can I just move windows from C to D??
I have tried it and it didnt work but maybe im going about it in the wrong way.
 
I see you've filled in that you have an external drive under "My computer specs" can't you copy some critical files or programs to that to see if the problem persists? Let's hope you simply need to clean up your main HDD.

You could run XP's Checkdisk tool, you'll find it under the Properties -> Extra when rightclicking on your C:\ drive icon in "My computer" Let it check for errors and repair them too.

That is exactly what I had thought. I actually have transfered over 1 gig of info from C to my external hdd, at first it recognized the free space but then the next day or after I turn it off it has some low mb's of space. I dont understand it. Everything on C cant be moved.

There may be a few things that I missed but it will probably still just not recognize the space I just freed.

I will try repairing the drive like u suggested. thx 4 help

Does anyone know if I can backup my windows folder into D and then just delete it from C. How does backing up files work??
 
repairing the drive didnt help but I did compress some files in C and i had 160mb's of free space but then when I turned my comp on this morning I only had 80mb's. Where is this memory going?!
 
Do you let windows control your virtual memory settings or have you set a specific amount? Maybe that's where your mb's are going?

If you r using XP Pro then go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Backup...... Otherwise for XP H u needs to get a software to do backup... try freewarehome.com for free Backup Software, Hopefully U will get one from there.....

RightClick MyComputer > Properties > Advanced Tab > Click settings under Performance Group Box > Advanced Tab > there you will find your Virtual Memory Group box...
 
Is there another way to do that cuz I cant access my properties through my desktop? (thats another weird problem that I dont feel like dealing w/ right now)
 
O i c. that was the problem. Thx guys. Now Im gonna let windows take memory from my G drive, that should solve the problem.
 
Ok, just a last comment !

You should always have at least 5% free space on the hard drive.

You didn't write how big this hard drive was but still,
having less than 7% on a big hard drive,
like 80Gb and up and at least 5% on smaller ones
on the system drive makes you computer lag enormously.
Windows recommends 10% but that can be ignored.

I don't think that the hard drive actually "restarted", then you would have gotten a BSOD,
but it can momentarily seems like it's freezing up from the lag.

It's natural that the amount of free space varies somewhat from one time to another,
it can also depend on how much you have in your "Temporary Internet folders",
if you have downloaded new stuff,
of what ever you do on the computer, the data changes.

If this is a smaller, older hard drive it can also have bad sectors,
do a disk check that also includes checking for bad sectors.
 
I realize that having as low amount of space that I have is bad, but I dont know how it got this way. I used to have a few gigs of space left in C and its just been shrinking. And as far as the hdd restarting, I actually heard it shut off then just turn back on.

I would just put all of my C on to my G drive(external) but its not a bootable drive. My internal hdd is a 30gig WD hdd. I have it split to my D drive having 19.5 gigs of space and my C drive as having 8.5 gigs. Is there anyway to take memory from D and giving it to C w/o having to format it(and lose everything)?
