help buying new graphics card

can anyone help ,my son needs a better card at the moment he has a ati 7000 and he needs something a bit better, have looked at a ati 9250 and a fx 5500 has anyone any suggestions
 
Well, I would recommend that you get the best possible card for you motherboard, seeing how fast GFX cards and 3D games advance. I'm not sure of your AGP version but I would say you should probably get a 9800 or (not sure if this is the comparable nVidia card, but I believe it is) a 5700.
 
Depends on what your son uses the machine for? Games? Movies? W/e else? There are many different options you can select from, just depends on what you gonna be doing. :)
 
i agree with Calebcross..but if he's using the pc usually for games then i would recommend a pci-express motherboard with atleast a nvidia 6600 card..or if the mobos an AGP then atleast a nvidia 5700 or 5900 card will do..pliz provide specs of system and wat ur son is intending to do with it..
 
Well, of course it all depends on what you want to do, but a 9800 will do all of the afore mentioned things. As for PCI-E, if you do that you are getting into some pretty serious work changing components. I assume that he just wants a simple change of video cards. Also, when you upgrade a motherboard and throw in a 6600 you are easily looking at $250.
 
The 6600GT is quite nice, I've been looking into upgrading my card myself. There are AGP versions of that and can probably be found for around $200.
 
Personally, what i think your looking for is a graphics card that is to meet your sons requirements at minimum as his ATI 7000 isn't cutting the job, an Nvidia 6200 or an ATI 9250 isn't going to make that much difference, they are better cards, but not much performance for your money over the ATI 7000, what i would do is get a solid mid-level card, a card that will be slightly more expensive, but is going to last alot longer for your sons requirements.

I would recommend (depending on your budget):
ATI X600 / X600 Pro
ATI X700 / X700 Pro
Nvidia 6600 128MB (£70-£80 - about $130-140
ATI X800 128MB 128bit (£85 - about $130-140)

I personally think these are your best bets, but i am assuming minimum he has AGP 8x & Socket A, if you list his motherboard / computer details we can help you out alot more.
 
If it is within your budget, I would really get the Geforce 6600GT AGP ; it is excellent price/performance.

Go for at least > Nvidia Geforce 6600 , 256 MB. you can get it for around 100$ , I have one (gigabyte 6600DP) - Its ok for games if you dnt use very high settings.
