Help Monitor Goes Black

Hi I have just completed my first self build with the following spec.

AMD Sempron 2800+ S754 256KB
ASRock S754 nForce3 250 MATX A L
400 W PSU
512MB 184Pin DIMM PC3200 CL3 NP DDR 400
Maxtor DiamondMax Plus10 120GB S150
Samsung DVD+-R/RW 16x16x
Windows XP Home sp2

Now the problem I have is that I have fitted a Geforce 6200, I know it's not the best graphics card but don't want to do any gaming, the mobo has no built in video card so did not have to disable. When I installed the driver the screen went black, on restart in safe mode I diasbled the card in device manager, then altered the resolution and colour setting to 16 bit, as soon as I enabled the card it went black again. I've tried everything, including altering the BIOS, I can think of and even with the hardware acceleration at none it makes no difference. Am I missing something, at the moment I am running the system with the card disabled but I would like to get this sorted.
Any help would be gratefuly appreciated.
 
Did you install the most up to date drivers and were they the correct drivers? Something like this happened to me before except my computer wouldnt boot at all and I had to reformat.
 
It could be that your monitor is low-end and cannot support the refresh rate your video card is trying to use. Try a lower refresh rate.
 
I lowered the refresh rate to 60 Hz and even at this it has no effect, the driver I installed is the correct one but may not be the latest. I guess I will install the latest driver and see what effect this has.

Thanks for the suggestions, updating the driver for the latest model made a massive difference, however the screen now freezes when I open programmes like powerpoint, or word which contain a large number of jpeg files. I have to lower the hardware acceleration to none to be able to use these programmes, is this normal. I have reset the BIOS to default settings to see if this has any effect, but it doesn't.
I would be grateful for any help.
 
No the card is fairly basic so does not have an external power source, it just fits in to a PCI slot, I have read on this forum that a PCI slot is no good for graphics cards, could this be the problem.
 
I think I will have to get an AGP card as have an AGP slot. Why do Geforce make a PCI card if it cant even run programmes like powerpoint, or is there something else I can try.

PCI cards are the only option if you have a typical OEM system like Dell or HP. They have integrated video with no expansion slot, so PCI is typically the only option for people in that situation who want to upgrade their video. Of course, concerning Powerpoint, that program is not very good anyway concerning video accellerated features. It is about 95% dependant on the CPU, and about 5% on the video card.
 
I also have a Geforce 6200(256mb) which i understand is one of the slower 256 cards but when im playing quake 4 my monitor will sometimes go black for a second and come back. It doesnt effect my gaming that much because it happens about every 8 minutes for 1 second but it still would be great if it stopped. Any suggestions??????
