To make a long story short, I was tricked into reformatting my hard drive and now can no longer connect to my wireless home network and thus have no internet access. My computer is a Compaq Presario SR1750NX running Windows XP, my ISP is AT&T, and my wireless adapter is a Netgear WPN111 USB device. I have already been to the Compaq and Netgear websites but their drivers and software simply do nothing to solve the problem. I only have less than two days to fix this, and I am only able to connect to the internet via a handheld device. How can I connect to the internet again like before?

Are you using a 2 wire modem/ router ? I am having the same problem with Netgear..
Netgear wants you to Disable windows wireless in order for it to work.. I think the best way,is to just install a wireless network card, and not use netgear.

Actually if I just take Netgear's program or whatever it is out of the Startup folder then it seems to work fine. Still, I'm only getting a Good signal when I'm used to getting at least Very Good or even Excellent sometimes. Finicky wireless signals. Oh wells, thanks all for your help, I wouldn't have kept trying otherwise.

If I understood the situation correctly you are not able to go online after formatted the hard drive and reloaded the windows on your computer? right?
If that is the case, have you checked for any bangs in the device manager screen under network adapter and other devices topic.
If there are no bangs have you installed the respective wireless router software to your computer and checked the connection.
Before even connecting to router, you have to check the internet settings with a wired connection.
If the wired settings are working fine, please follow the instruction from the router cd which would let you know how to configure the wireless configuration.
Hope this would help to some extent..

Well I have been checking around for information, but unfortunately every tip and trick about improving the wireless signal has already been checked out by me. What's more troubling is the fact that I've changed nothing about my router's position, channel, and firmware, and I have the latest drivers, but it's WORSE than it was before. It's inferior to what it was able to achieve before reformatting, which means AT&T must've either installed some kind of alternative drivers I have no clue about or did some secrety thing when setting it up that they refrained from telling me about. If it's any help, I THINK that the router connection icon is now applying to the wireless network rather than the internet like before, although I can't be sure. All I've been able to confirm thus far is that the issue is not one that's available on the first several pages of plagiarized Google search results.
