How do I encrypt data?

I have some data on a thumb drive that I would like to encrypt, but I am not sure how to do this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
 
Depending on the brand of the drive, either the Data gets automatically encrypted upon copying to the device or the software that comes with the drive will allow you to do it.
 
Well it is a PNY Attache drive and there was no software with it. Ideally what I would like to do is to be able to password protect the device
 
Hmmm, i'm sorry. Your Attache' drive doesn't support any kind of encryption technology or password protection.
It does however on some models, have a write protect switch, if that makes you feel any better.
I know alot of the SanDisk, Crucial and Verbatim flash drives have encryption technology of some sort.
Might be worth checking out.
 
An easy and cheap way to stop people from seeing your data (or opening secret documents) is to zip (I prefer RAR myself) and password the archive.

Even though a nosey git could see inside the archive, he will not be able to extract and/or open the documents without a password....

Post back if you are unsure....
 
Windows has some basic encryption built in:

Right click any file > Select properties > Click the advanced button at the bottom of the general tab > Tick the 'encrypt contents to secure data' box.

Thats a good idea. I never knew you could password an archive. I will try this. thanks for the help

O ya and I cant encrypt the data through windows. that box is dimmed out. Wonder why?
