Ok I have an OS class this semester. We will - of course - learn DOS, Windows 2000 Pro and Red Hat 9 (why is it always Red Hat btw ???? but that's not the point)

The whole fucking point is since I'll study Win 2k Pro, I thought I'd install Win 2k on my system w/ RH9, as well as XP which I already have.

So I installs Win 2k on the G: drive (c and d belongs to XP, e and f are my optical drives). It installs properly.

first sign that MS fucked my system up is that the boot menu stays on for 0.00000000000000000000000000000000001 seconds and boots into W2k automatically. I then proceed to instal DX9, reboot and install the ATI drivers. After that what I get is a blue background (not a blue screen) with absolutely nothing on it.

Ok I'm just gonna' boot into XP, delete that partition and everything'll be fine right ? ..... WRONG I cannot boot in XP anymore. W2k scrapped my XP install and I had to format that partition too in order to do anything valuable.

MS can't even give the possibility to dual boot with two of their OS independantly. That's fuckin' BS. Aside from the fact that W2k will stop being supported with the arrival of W2k3, which btw, implements a BS algorithm that prevents Java programming.

They want you to use their BS J++ language which doesn't work with anything and which no one uses anyway.

I had installed they're fuckin Visual Studio .net but was never able to compile a god damn 3 line program. Wtf is up with them ? Oh I know, they want you to get their gay-ass (so-called) certifications that no one needs and no one can afford, nor do they want to.

A+...that's another fuckin' scam. Anyone that has ever gone in a Future Shop (that's a store that deals with electronics) will have noticed that their so-called technicians have the A+ certifications, therefore they are [supposed to be] qualified to make any changes in your system.

Then why is it that every fuckin' time they sell DDR Ram they can't even tell you WHAT THE FUCKIN' SPEED OF THEIR BS AZEN RAM IS ???????? not that I bought any, but every time read their flyer they never EVER put the speed of their DDR Ram.

EDIT Tehy also tell you that the GeForce FX5200 is the card to get to process "heavy" graphic applications like the newest, more demanding game....

/runs to get the A+ cert.
 
I don't mean to mess up your rant here (I agree with most everything, AAMOF), but when you're setting up a multi-boot environment, always install the oldest OS first, followed by the next newest until finally you install the newest OS (i.e. Linux). That way the newest OS can handle the boot loader (instead of stupid Windows!).
 
I new I had to install Red Hat last because Windows messes up the mbr anyway but didn't know about the oldest first.

In any case, Windows always installs things on the C: drive no matter what and what I'd like to have is two independent installs...which I cannot have.

EDIT: Oh and if you ask me, it shouldn't be an issue whether you install one or the other first. You should have the right to do whatever it is you want with your partitions.
In any case, I would have had to format anyway so...I think it's stupid that you have to do it that way.

You're absolutely right! We should be able to have full control over our own computers. With MS, we're allowed to have the MS-dose of control. No more. That's why I run Linux :) I've had half-a-dozen Linux distros on one HDD during labs, with *no* problems.

EDIT: Oh, and *no* lockups ;)
 
I'm thinking seriously of going Linux, although I'll always have Windows installed for things like games and because college works with windows, not Linux.
 
Well, my college (that I'm not attending) only upgraded to Win2k recently...I forgot how bad 98 really was (WinME takes the cake tho).
 
I remember that mine used NT4.0 2 or 3 years ago. Now they moved to Win 2k Pro. Students that'll go in the network branch are supposed to learn Win 2k but they'll probably learn 2k3 when support for 2k ends.
 
There really aren't that many differences between the interfaces of NT4 vs NT5. There's quite a bit that changed 'under the hood' between NT4 and NT5, but 5.1(XP) is really just a little window-dressing -- no pun intended. Just think "Win98 vs WinME".... *shudder*

I don't know why schools would use Windows of any version, it just doesn't make any sense to me. Linux is much easier to manage and maintain, and I.T. can spend more time doing important things instead of constantly 'putting out fires'. Also, students can actually take a close look at the way the OS works, and even write some code themselves. Besides, it's freakin' free! :sick:
 
ahaha SO so SO lucky my skool computers are still on 95 AHAHAHAHAHA xept for th libary ones have 2k find this halarious. any way bout wat harrack52 said to begin with. i have 98, 2k, and xp on the one partition and they couldnt run better but as you probly know put xp any where near redhat you have total destruction of all Oses so keep them seperate
 
Well I disagree.

I think it's very important to learn how Windows work because it's widely used.

I think anyone who call themselves a computer specialist should know both Linux and Windows, as well as DOS and QBasic :p

Qbasic... *shudder*. I'd actually rather use DOS than Win95 though. :) But you're right, harrack52. I've worked on systems that I personally wouldn't even use for a doorstop, which happen to be running mission-critical apps on Windows 3.0. In the field, you never know what the hell you're going to encounter.
