Ok so I've installed Mandriva finally in my laptop (RC2) and set up everything as i like. Yesterday, I managed to get my connection working. All was fine until today when i couldn't get any connection to the internet. My connection was showing as "Connected" in the system tray, but when i monitor the network, theres no data being sent and only some being received. Whats strange is that it was working yesterday.
That is pretty strange. You might try using the Mandriva Control Center to recreate the network connection. you can either launch it by browsing through Star -> System -> Configuration -> Configure Your Computer, or alternately from the terminal: Code: mcc Then in the Networking section, choose 'New Connection' and recreate your network connection by walking through the simple procedure. Did that fix it? -AT P.S. - You should go through this tutorial and set up your urpmi repositories (make sure you choose '2006' for your distro when you're setting up urpmi). Then go through this one and run the cron job after you've created it. It will update your entire system from 2006 RC2 to 2006 Final. All the best, -AT
Still nothing, deleted and created a new connection. I even reinstalled it as a last resort with an upgrade. I'll try a few other things.
I fixed it now, I didn't find what it was but after exhausting all my ideas I just reinstalled without an upgrade. Not sure what I did that could have caused it. Anyway setting up repositories now and updating to 2006 final...
My guess is that your network settings for that connection were incorrect, but now they've been adjusted automatically by the installer for you and thereby work.
One other thing. I've noticed that my download speeds have been slower than that with Windows. Normally I'd get around 50kb/s or more with http or ftp downloads but now its hovers around 30kb/s. Any ideas?
Of course, that depends largely on the traffic through your ISP and that of the site you're downloading from, but generally you should be able to squeeze more bandwidth out of Linux than you ever could out of Windows. I've noticed for 100 megabit transfers on my local network, Windows machines usually move about 4.5mb/sec, while the Linux ones all do 8.5mb/sec. It could also be a more accurate bandwidth estimation between the two OSes, as I've noticed descrepancies like that in Windows all the time. I've had a friend who swore he downloaded at 12k/sec on his 56k modem in Windows, which is of course impossible due to the limits of the technology. In reality it was somewhere under 5k. Anyway, my whole point is there are a lot of variables, so don't assume anything just yet. -AT
Woah, just noticed this. My clock is going uber fast. Its doing an extra 1 minute or so per minute! I checked and the seconds count is not normal. I think this is a bug with AMD64 CPUs, and since I'm on a S754 Sempron it would make sense. They're working on fix hopefully.
Ahh yeah, that'd be a BIOS bug. You might check and see if there's any upadates for your firmware out there.
Well i found a temporary fix my using the Force no APIC option, seems to have stopped the steroids. What is APIC for anyway? Will disabling it prevent me fom doing anything?
