Is there a linux distro specifically made for handling LAN gaming? Or will any run of the mill distro work?

Any distro will work, but Mandriva is pretty easy to setup and use.

Ok i'll give it a shot, I've been familiarizing myself with Damn Small Linux in the past week or two, so it shouldn't give me too much trouble.

Mandriva is compiled with MMX optimizations, so it's a good gaming distro. Gentoo is also good for that, except that you have to compile everything from source, which takes forever. If you roll your own kernel, you'll get even better performance, especially with multitasking. I can get messenger popups and notifications from my Apache server while I'm gaming without losing FPS, running Mandriva 2006 with custom-rolled kernel and nvidia modules. Yoper is also supposed to be pretty fast, but I don't have to much experience with it as it lacks polish IMHO.
