Mixing different speed RAMs

Hi all,

I am new to this site. At my office i have a problem while upgrading RAM. Before that i was using 512MB DDR2 533MHz RAM, then i tried to add a 512MB DDR2 633MHz RAM. It is working quite well, but not with the Firefox 3.0.1 browser, it crashes often. And my PC Configuration is Intel P4 3GHz HT and the motherboard is MSI-7247.

My question is can we mix the RAMs having different speed means a 533MHz and a 633MHz together?
 
Unfortunely usually no. If you go into your system settings, how much physical RAM does it say it has? You might be better off picking up some Dual Channel DDR2 since it is so cheap. Also you have to make sure that You Motherboard can support 633MHz.

Of the same type, yes, you can run them together. However, you'll be limited to the speed of the slower of the two.

RAM speeds are just the maximum speed it's guaranteed at, not the only. It's like a tire speed rating. Say a tire is rated for 150MPH: it will work fine at speeds up to that, like 40MPH, but beyond that is not.

The 533MHz stuff will run up to 533MHz without issue. The 633MHz stuff will run up to 633MHz. You must go with the slower of the two for it to work without issue, as you'd be overclocking the slower stuff to run it beyond 533MHz.

If you're having a problem with one app, it's likely just that one program.
