Motherboard question

Hi!!
I've got a K7VZA v.3 motherboard and now I would like to upgrade it with an Athlon XP CPU. Can anybody tell me if this motherboard suppports CPUs with a speed higher than 1500 mhz, for example an Athlon XP 1600+?

I've checked ECS website and I can't get anywhere as their drop down menus don't seem to be working ATM. I do see that they have BIOS updates for it which could add support for the XP's. Anyway, if you haven't checked ECS website ( www.ecs.com.tw ) that's what I'd try and see if you can get the BIOS page to come up.

I'd also stop by the forums over at www.amdmb.com and check out their ECS section.
 
On the motherboard side, i just wondered if i got a new much talller base unit with more drive slots...would my old motherbaord still fit ? are motherboards all the small size ?!?!

if they are all the same size i may get a new one with more ram slots etc which will make my choosing much easier

What is your motherboard and what type of case are you planning on upgrading too?

Anything recent is most likely and ATX board so as long as you get and ATX case you should be fine.
 
Depending on what you have now, especially if it's only got 4 or less expansion slots---which would be in the micro ATX formfactor---it should work. However, if you have an older PC (typically Pentium or older) system then you have an AT motherboard or more likely a baby AT. Sometimes cases come with several different I/O panels (where the onboard port tend to be) with different ones for AT and ATX motherboards. I don't buy cases that often, but I'd check before purchasing if you do have an older system and want to buy things a little at a time.
 
the only reason why im going to buy a case is i have no room in my current case for my new dvd drive and my new cd re-writer.

i don't have a clue what make my motherboard is...

my pc is a bit old: intel celeron processor genuintel 700mhz :swt:
 
Unless it's a really wierd motherboard, it will be ATX. Probably a micro ATX. If it is the case...have fun. I didn't like that last HP I worked on---had to pretty much disassemble the whole thing just to get to the memory slots...something that shouldn't have taken more than a few minutes.

A 700MHz isn't a speed demon, but if you're not running a lot or anything intensive, like a video game, that's still plenty.

If u look at cpu_k7.htm u shud c what athlons its suports but I dont get it, it says 1333mhz is max
can this be due it only has sdram so 133mhz fsb ?
 
It may be that the board is simply unable to accept the Athlon XP's (and any Duron 1GHz and faster) due to the way the board was made. If it's supporting the 133MHz FSB, then that's not an issue. Probably that ECS didn't feel the need to support anything higher.

My motherboard supports 133 MHz FSB, so I guess that it will run with an Athlon XP CPU.

I noticed RZA has a particular board revision of the same board you have. It may not mean anything, but an older revision may have some slight differences that make it not work with the XP's. I can't say for absolute sure, but it might be a good idea to check it out just in case. I'd hate to be stuck with a CPU that I couldn't use due to a motherboard that can't use them.

Other than that, it should be good to go.
