I have a custom built computer with some serious hardware inside it. Im usually pretty good with computers but I cant even find the socket on the cpu on this one. The cpu has pads on the bottom of it instead of pins. Never seen this before but this is not my issue. The computer stopped turning on and as i took it apart i was testing things to see what was causing this to happen. It seemed like it was shorting out because when you plug it in and push the power button you see the fan inside the psu move slightly as if it received half a second of power and then it cut off. So I found out that the problem is the cpu power connector. The 8 pin connector from the psu to the motherboad is causing the computer to short out, when i unplug the cpu, everything inside the computer comes on, lights, disks spin up, fans all spinning. But when the connector is plugged in it shorts out or kills it. I took the cpu out of the machine and plugged the cpu connector in anyway thinking this would tell me whether its the cpu or the motherboard that is not working properly. With the cpu out of the machine and the cpu power connector plugged in the machine shorted out anyway. I tested the psu on a different motherboard and it powered it fine so its not the psu. Since the board shorted out without the cpu i believe that the board is faulty and needs to be replaced, but im not 100% sure thats what it means. i need someone who has had more experience with this to reassure me that i am correct. The board costs 200 dollars and i dont wanna buy the board if thats not the issue here.
