Need help choosing parts for my home made router :)

Hi! I need some help choosing parts for my home made router project! I've herd that a router made from a old pc, or a low preformance pc, is much better than those you get in the store, is this true? In my router i need minimum 1 cable output, a powerful wifi sender, and 1 wan input. Is it possible to get this for about 400 - 500 $ ? If so, where can i find good parts?

well there's no such thing as good parts and bad parts because a "good" part is a working part and a "bad" part is one that fails and unfortunately it is impossible to predict when a part (good or bad) will fail,

well first you'll need a modem, two internal NICs (Network Interface Card) and an WAP (Wireless Access Point)

but any old 386 powered old PC with something like IPCop, PfSense, IPFire.

for anyone starting out i would recommend IPCop then IPFire and finally PfSense.

you can even run a firewall as a VM (Virtual Machine) in VirtualBox and although i wouldn't class it as a firewall it will work as a firewall

BTW: the NICs may aswell be Gigabit compatible an not forgetting at least 3 CAT5e or CAT6 Ethernet cables

BTW: those three firewall OSs (Operating System) are the first 3 i could think of but there are many more.
