need help with a cable modem setup for linux

I have a cable modem (USB) that I cannot setup with my Mandrake Linux. All that I know about my modem is a name : NetMaster CME075. I know that the Linux support for USB modems is a bit sticky. Does anyone know if I can somehow connect to the net?

PS. I tried the cable modem setup howto or the hardware compatibility list for Mandrake or Red Hat.. Still nothing..
 
Well, it looks to have a network jack on it, and you'd have alot easier time if you'd pick up a network card (just stay far, far away from Netgear) and use that.
 
how to connect

I actually do have a network card. Could do possibly tell me where I could find some sort of documentation on how to hook up? (The modem I believe does not act as a router. So some way I have to configure the network and make it the gateway, right? I am not so good at linux configuration.. )

Well, you shouldn't have to make your PC the gateway. It'll seek out the gateway on its own if you allow it to autoconfigure. Unless that is, you want your PC to be a gateway for a NAT network. Otherwise, you pretty much just connect the modem to your NIC, set your IP address (if dynamic, DHCP), and you're good to go. You'll probably need a crossover cable to make the Modem work with your NIC, but I'm not sure. It varies from model to model :) BTW, if you need an inexpensive router, I recommend the Netgear RP614. Integrated 4-port switch, true SPI Firewall, and super easy to configure. And the price is right :)
