Needing help picking out computer parts

I am trying to make a computer but I am lost on what parts to use.
My budget is around $600 and I want to use the computer for gaming and listening to music. I dont need a big hard drive because I dont have much music. I mostly want a fast computer.
Could anyone tell me what parts to use. I'm not trying to get you to do all of the work but if someone would tell me I would do some research on the parts and see some feedback on them.

Before I pick out some components ideas for you I should know: Do you have a monitor, keyboard, mouse, and do you mind using onboard sound (almost as good as a sound card).

To answer you question. I have a really old monitor but It doesnt look all that great. I think I might be able to pick out a monitor later though. I have a keyboard. I do not have a mouse. and sorry... but what is onboard sound?
 
Okay so I'll just look for a mouse in addition to the other components. Onboard audio, also know as integrated audio/sound, is basically just an audio chipset build into the motherboard, requires a little extra work from the cpu than a normal sound card but the quality it almost always very good.

I'm worried that the video card that is built into the motherboard isn't good quality based on some of the reviews. are there any other mother boards and sound cards?

And about the Cd drive. to burn cds doesn't it take 2 disc drives?
 
You mean the integrated audio? Yeah that's what I read but apparently a BIOS update fixed the problem, plus you could just buy a nice sound card that would give you some extra ports and higher quality audio without any performance degredation (integrated audio takes up a few extra CPU clock cycles so you might loose at most 5% performance in games).
This is the very best sound card for the money, it's specs match the big boys:)

You don't need two optical drives to burn CD's so long as the files you want to burn are stored in your hard drive, otherwise you can simply copy the files from a CD into iTunes, a new folder, etc. And burn from there. A DVD rom drive (also reads CD's) will only set you back $20 so it's your choice.

You don't need this, it's easier to setup your rig without two optical drives but it does streamline burning complete copies of CD's.
 
Ooh so what you're saying is I could still add a sound card even with the built in one still there? If so then I would be satisfied with the motherboard you recomended.

Yes, onboard sound is fused to the motherboard itself. A sound card will simply occupy an available PCI slot, though you'll have to disable onboard audio in the BIOS first but it's very simple:)

Damn Ex, you're really racking up the Thanks' there. Anyways, everyhting else looks great. Fred's rig would be killer if you wanted it to look nice and that also gives you around $150 to play around with.

i cant really recommend, each sytem has its pros and cons, i just recommended this site to someone else, and might as well to you too, try tomshardware.com to see how your parts rack up to others in their benchmarks

The system I picked out for you is a no-comprimize best possible components for the money situation. I haven't seen anything more powerful for the price but I could be wrong.
