Hello all,
please bear with me on this one as i have very little computer knowledge.

The situation is: We have a HP desktop PC that is the main internet PC in the house. We have now connected this to a NETGEAR wireless modem router.

We have two other MESH desktop PCs, one each in the kids bedrooms. What we are trying to do is allow internet access on both of them. We have connected BELKIN adaptors to them (Comet said its fine to use a different make) and they both have connected to the network fine.

We have then installed our AOL software on each of them but the problem is that the software cant find a modem. When my wife bought the computers she did not get modems installed on them as we thought that the router acts as a modem for the other two pc's.

Is this correct and should this work?

We are on AOL silver, do i have to upgrade to allow up to three people online at once?

Check if you have a wireless LAN card in your PC, that's what you'll need rather than an internal modem :)

Thanks for the reply,just looked through the invoice for the Mesh computers and listed is: 1x Gigabit LAN (onboard)

is this what im looking for?

If it's not WLAN or W/LAN then you're out of luck my friend.

It looks like all you've got is a standard onboard wired LAN card.

You can buy wireless USB dongles that act as a wireless card, they don't cost much... Try buying one of those, that'll do the trick.

Out of interest we currently have BELKIN G USB network adaptors plugged into the MESH computers, will these be redundent once we buy the other ones?

They're the wireless adaptors I spoke of...

Make sure the drivers for the devices are installed correctly if they came with installation discs... Not a big fan of wireless networking myself so it might be best to ask someone else on the forums... I'll link Matt to this post later, he's good with networking.

You said in your first post that you have connected your Mesh PCs to the network fine right?

You dont need the AOL software to connect each PC to the internet, you just need to use the router/modem to connect to the AOL server and if all of your PCs are properly networked, each PC should have a decent internet connection.

STEPS ON HOW TO SETUP NETGEAR MODEM/ROUTER FOR AOL.
1. Using any PC, connect to the Router's Control Panel.
- Open Up any web browser (ie. Internet explorer)
- Type "http://192.168.0.1" on the address bar.
- Enter the username and password (default username is admin and the default password is password)
2. Connecting to AOL
- On the Left Blue Panel, under setup, choose Basic Settings.

- Fill Up the form (please refer to the photo below) and click apply.

- Wait for about 1 minute after you clicked Apply, then test it by opening a web browser and browse the net.

managed to get evertything sorted. It appeared that the two Belkin adaptors we bought had different software versions, one worked the other did not.

Hi all,

Could anyone help me with the following:

The kids each have a PC connected to the network,everything is working fine.
We are on AOL and the kids are both on mature teens via the parental controls. This works fine and they both log on using their own screen names etc.

The problem is that if they click on the Internet Explorer symbol they can get straight online and access any site they want!

I have tried to limit the content via the tools/internet options but everysite they try and go onto a box comes up from explorer asking for a password that i have to put in.(even childrens sites)

I have tried to disable Internet Explorer (found on a search), this works and you cant get online via the internet explorer symbol but once online if you click on it another page opens that allows full access.

any help appreciated

First of all, you dont want to uninstall IE completely because Windows Update needs it.

You can prohibit IE from accessing the internet by using a dummy proxy server.

From IE select Tools > Internet Options > Connections > LAN Settings.

Put a tick mark in the check box next to 'Use a Proxy Server for your LAN'

Type in 0.0.0.0 in the address box and 80 in the Port box.

Then click OK.
