New build advice sought

My HP is giving my trouble so I think it is time to build a new system. Since the store bought system just didn't seem to last as long as my last home build I've decided to do a home build again. The problem is it has been a long time since I've built a system. Things a bit more complex since my last build and I'd like some advice, mostly with compatibility. Because of illness money is very tight and this will be a limiter.

The system will be mostly used for video conversion and editing so it will need some power. As the only person in the family with computer knowledge we are given all the media from the rest of the family to convert and edit.

System will most likely run dual boot with Windows 7 and Ubuntu, I'd like a sturdy mid tower, processor is I'm not sure about. Same goes for mother board, one thing I do not like is shared video ram. I've never met a system with this feature that ran well.

What would you guys recommend for this kind of work?
 
i cant give you any specifics on what parts to get, but it may help if you set a budget on how much you're welling to spend to make this new rig of yours.
then start by looking into motherboards, since that's the main piece that set all your compatibility and what not...

i've heard GIGABYTE motherboards are more compatible for video editing and what not, but im not 100% on that.
but definitely start from there, and everything should start fitting together! :) research is definitely key

My original budget idea was between $400 - $500 but that doesn't seem to be enough. Since the Intel Quad Core in this HP m9040n is what the problem is. I also am used to able to reuse more of the old parts, even the wireless keyboard is acting up. I only plan on reusing the hard drives and the monitor for this build. Adding in the cost of Windows 7 and I can't see getting away with much under $600 - $700.
 
Alright so you need all the components, windows 7, mouse and keyboard? I should have a build priced out by tonight. You want a dedicated GPU and you wont be doing any intense media editing correct?
 
Because of constant migraines (this is why money is tight here) I haven't had a chance to look closely at this configuration yet. I would like to upgrade it to a quad core and 8 gig of ram if I can afford it. Would I notice this upgrade?
