Hi! Just wanted to thank everyone here who helped with advice for upgrading my system. I've now built the following : Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe Mobo, 1 GB PC3200 RAM, AMD Athlon XP3000+ Barton CPU, Antec TruePower 430 PSU, WD 160JD SATA HDD, Pioneer DVD-RW 106D, Atapi (??) 16x DVD-ROM. Had no probs installing Windows XP Home (SP1 & 2). I dont know whether I've just been lucky but I've now got the bug for building & maybe modding in future. Thanks again to everyone for advice - you're all stars!! :good:
 
My PC did work for a few good months. And it worked well flawlessly. But my PSU died. That wasn't my fault.

Hey that was just your HD being too sensitive and old. Mine broke when i was doing normal things. Your broke cuz it must have exceeded its G rating.
 
G as in G-Force? It spun so fast that it lost control and flew off in to the cruel, dark, empty void that is reality.

Oh - glad you got your system working, but what graphics card do you have, out of my own curiosity?
 
Hi Waffle, my graphics card is an A9200SE/TD 128MB which will be fine (hopefully) as I'm not into gaming :o just manipulation of digital photos/video etc.
 
Yep G force. The barracuda i have has a 350G limit. That sounds a lot but in actual fact if you drop a HD from 12" above a steel surface the drive experiences around 1100Gs. But if you put it into a Seashell (the protective cover by Seagate) it only takes 180Gs.
 
OK, I knew it wouldn't be too long before I had to pick your communal brains again!!
I'm about to attempt a build using bits n bobs so nothing outstanding. When it comes to installing an operating system can I simply use my existing Win XP Home SP1 CD + additional SP2 CD & key? Have read elsewhere that MS monitor keys for piracy etc.?? Mine is a genuine OEM which I purchased last year. Have also been informed that, by rights, my upgrade should've triggered alarm bells during activation. I've not heard anything from MS as yet ... Once again guys your advice is most welcome. Thanks for your time.
 
Thanks Addis. I've got the original CD and have only used it on my existing computer (the one I've just upgraded) ... but .... can I also install it on the computer I'm about to build?? Or, do I have to buy another copy & line the pockets of Mr Gates (and I dont mean Gareth :D )??
 
Technically thats not allowed. If you install it onto another one then it will still ask you to activate it and that probably won't work. If you want to stay legal then your going to have to add to Gate's 40billion+ balance.
