new to overclocking

my board is made by Epox, model - 4b2m.

The jumper is set out like this.

1 2 3
. . .

the shunt is currently over 1 and 2 and is the default setting

placing the shunt over 2 - 3 is the reset setting.

I have not been able to find a specifice mehtod in the manual for doing this.

Do i want the power on when i short the pins?
Do i want the shunt on?
 
i have also found this in the manual

Note: Overclocking failure will cause system No display problem. At this moment, please press “Insert” key to back to the initial or default
setting to boot up your system.

This did not work, the keyboard is not functioning.
 
Thought id give an update on my situation.

After doing a component check i seems that the RAM is problem. With everything in i get nothing. but with the RAM out i get loud angry bleeps.

so im going to get some replacement RAM.

since i am now getting bleeps i assume that everything else is working fine, ie processor etc.

any other comments before i buy new RAM?
 
PC133 is an older technology, so you can get alot for fairly cheap. You might consider a stick of 512MB with the prices so low.

Also, one other thing you might wanna try before hitting the store is putting the RAM you have in a different slot and also making sure the stick is fully inserted into the slot. Some boards have a little more of a problem when it comes to inserting RAM. You could've knocked the stick loose and not have known it. It wouldn't take much.
 
there appear to be two types of ram with different module configurations on is
64 x 64
and the other is
64 x 72
what is the difference is something to with the location
ie, does UK differ from rest of eurpoe
 
new ram doesnt work!!! :(
its the same as before. so if my ram is fine and the motherboard beeps when there are no components. then i have to jump to the conclusion that my processor is fried!!!! :sad:
is there any way of telling that the processor is done in just by looking at it?
 
The P4's are quite resiliant to frying themselves. They will back the speed down if they get to hot. If you gave it over 1.75 volts on the core voltage, that could've killed it.

Now, if you haven't smelled something burning, I don't think the CPU is fried.

I think it'd be harder to tell if the CPU had been fried or not since the core is covered by a heatspreader, and the removal of that would void any warranty (not that it matters since you attempted an overclock)

It could be that the board just crapped out on you too, and it looks like that's something that's probably happened. Bad timing yes, but it's looking like that's a highly possible cause of your problems.
I'd suggest testing your CPU in another persons system if possible and see if the system works. If it does, well, you've basically found the motherboard to be the culprit. If it doesn't, then the CPU's the problem.
Failing that option, you could pony up some cash to get the CPU tested at a shop and possibly the motherboard.
 
looks like taking it to a shop is my only option, as i dont have another p4 system to test on, and im not confident with taking out processors anyway.

bought a replacemnt motherboard and fitted it myself (my first time ;) ) but the onboard sound didnt work so i had to buy a sound card. total cost £105.
 
just to be safe i got the same board as i had before. (EP - 4B2M)
and the sound card was just the bog standard SB 4.1
(m-board £75 sound £30)
