Oil cooling

What do you guys think of oil cooling? I read an article on vegetable oil cooling that was pretty neat(cant think of the link, google it). Now my roomate is considering trying mineral oil cooling. Like having his entire system emerge in it. It sounds pretty neat, and he's allready ordered a special case for this project. Just looking for opinions, and hey, anyone whos tried this, tell me how it went.
 
I've not tried it, but I have to give kudos to those with the big brass ones that do so.
 
i would love to have a go at that if i had the money to sink a cpmputer in oil....

I think it was on Toms Hardware i seen something about this, but i dont think i would want to submerge my computer in oil, all the messing around when the time comes to upgrade..
 
You could then use Dinner Maker 2007; cook your dinner with your pc. Upgrade to Pro version, and have to ability to cook fries with your pc :P
 
Well the only real issue here would be how would you cool the Liquid once it was completely submerged??? Ok so you figure out some pumping mechanism, well oil is thick and i think that conventional pumps might have issues with that, so you might have to find some pump that would work with oil, which i am sure there are plenty. Secondly, at that point, why submerge the whole system when your basically doing the same thing as just having a conventional liquid cooling system. It would be cool to just do anyways, i'm not saying that, but after a little while, whatever fluid you decide to use will get warm over time and need some way to cool, and you'll need a BIG cooler and a large amount of air to cool all that liquid. LOL, wait i got it, find some way to get a water pump or oil pump off of a vehicle and then get a radiator and hook up an electric fan, (two would be better) and you'll be set. Seriously, that would be cool.
 
interesting, although i am still a little skeptical, i wonder how well it cools after a couple hours under load. Without any kinda of circulation, whether the oil just moving around in the case, or it being cooled externally, i can't really see how well that would work, but it is really cool, and kinda funny
 
Oil cooling! :) Sounds messy to me.

I know it depends on the oil but it doesnt sound ideal to me. You'd need something with a low viscosity if you didnt want to cook you cpu shortly after turning the pc on. Depending on the oil I wouldnt have thought it would be hard to cool. As long as the case isnt under pressure enough heat should be able to radiate from the sides of the case but you would still need to stir the oil around.

Its a bit daft! Surely the current "water" cooling (they cant use water?! can they?) setups would work as well.

If you need really low temps I dont see whats wrong with a peltier. You have control over the temp then too. I dont think I could be arsed with a water cooler, let alone oil.
 
Oh, this really isn't because we think it's going to be more effective than water cooling, we just think it sounds fun. Has anyone here ever heard of a Tesla turbine? Nikola Tesla invented an oil pump that never really caught on. But looking at the design for it reminded me of a hard drive, because it has 2 circular platters that spin together. So we've gutted an old hard drive, drilled the appropriate holes in it, and we're just gonna drop that in there. I have my doubts as to whether or not this will work, but theres one way to find out!
