Hi I have an old computer spec 512mb ram 60 gig hardrive which I am trying to boot up from cd installing a new operating system xp. As the system was very infected and slow I was advised to format it. I have left all in BIOS "boot from cd" actually evryhting is boot from cd but it does just not pick up .

Evrytime I try to do it it just goes back to normal, "start windows normall" or work fromLast known configaration"

I have even taken out the motherboard battery to see if that would chenge things but is still the same. Please help!

try downloading the MD5 sum, it is actually built in check for the CD & check the integrity of the CD
An MD5 sum is a string of letters and numbers that acts like a fingerprint for a file. If two files have the same MD5 sum, the files are exactly alike - which is why MD5 "fingerprints" can verify whether or not your downloaded file got corrupted in transit.

MD5's sound like advanced geekery - and indeed, they're calculated at the command line - but you don't have to be C3PO to use 'em. The CodeJacked weblog demonstrates how to use MD5's to make sure that big-ass download landed on your hard drive intact and identical to the version on the server

also will any other boot CD work in the system, try a Linux LiveCD

Edit: if the system is booting ok you could just run setup from within Windoze

strange, does it just timeout, what kind of keyboard do you have ?

because if there are batteries in it (wireles) the batteries could be dead

Do you hear the cd/dvd drive spinning at startup?
good point, & does the drive recognise CDs in Windoze

sorry system does not boot up at all now

How old is this PC ? and how old is the cd rom ? Is it a CD/rom or a CD-RW or
DVD ? If it is just a cd rom, then go buy a cleaning disk to see if that will help.
If it doesn't, then you will need to buy another one...
